I've got an awful cold, all my sinuses are a blocked and I'm feeling rubbish. I want to pop a packet of Sudafed and I can't as I'm pregnant. My ear is agony tonight and I feel so crap. I've taken paracetamol. What can I do to ease it?

Ear pain is the WORST, I was sobbing on the phone to 111 asking them to advise on something I could take in pregnancy but no dice.

Everyone will tell you hot water with lemon, ginger and honey. It’s popular for a reason and does help for various reasons but I wanted to strangle people suggesting it Grin I was like NO I WANT ALL OF THE DRUGS.

Hot water bottle on the affected ear was the only thing that got me the slightest bit of relief overnight, cannot recommend enough, and then managed to get Sofradex drops from my GP which also helped.

Hope you feel better soon! Flowers

Temporary relief - pour boiling water on a face cloth. Put facecloth in a cup or glass and hold the open end to your ear (not touching the cloth with your ear). If you do it with both ears you can also cheer yourself up by pretending you’re makka pakka

I had the same in pregnancy, god it was agony. Poor you. Hot water bottle all the way. Hot shower. I ended up crying to the doctor who gave me antibiotics for a sinus infection which worked within 2 days. I still think of him with fondness.

Sinusitis earlier in the year. Bet thing ever, better than medication. I’ll put Amazon link. I was suggested it by the local pharmacist. Once you get to grips with it !!

I have this exact thing right now too and also pregnant so no Sudafed. I bought a sinus rinse pot from Amazon and it's actually working wonders! That plus warm baths and a washing up bowl full of boiling water, stick a towel over it and your head under the towel and steam your face. If you have an oil diffuser a few drops of olbas oil or eucalyptus oil in there will help with congestion!

RamblingFar · 21/12/2021 21:16

Olbus Oil. Put on a tissue and breathe in.

I also add some to the water in a small humidifier and leave it one in the room I'm in.

Hankunamatata · 21/12/2021 21:17

Ibuprofen good for pain but not sure if pregnancy friendly

Hankunamatata · 21/12/2021 21:17

And yes humidifier. We have vicks one and great for kids too

HalfWomanHalfMincePie · 21/12/2021 21:18

Otrivine Spray?

I find it to be very effective when used sparingly, for the really bad block attacks.

rosesarereddish · 22/12/2021 11:21

It's even worse this morning it's weird my nose feels blocked but my sinuses feel ok but my right ear just feels totally plugged and is ringing loudly Sad

Steam inhalation with Vicks if allowed. Bit of Vicks into boiling water in a bowl. Pop a towel over your head and the bowl and breath in through your nose. Obas oil on a tissue in your pillow at night.
