Quick question r.e. sort code and account number?

Am I right in thinking you don't need someone's full name to pay them as long as you've got their sort code and account number? You can type in pretty much anything in the name field?

Thanks

Yes that's right m. Just put their name as far as you know

Eightandahalfyears · 21/12/2021 20:24

Not any more. They match the name to the account now so you need the correct name.

normanthegonk · 21/12/2021 20:25

Sometimes they match them, sometimes not

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 21/12/2021 20:27

HSBC online match them and make you go back and correct it.

Yummypumpkin · 21/12/2021 20:27

Yeah my bank sort of won't let me know without a name!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 21/12/2021 20:28

I think you get a warning if the name you enter doesn't match the account name but it will still make the payment if you choose to proceed.

Madcats · 21/12/2021 20:29

Most (UK) banks will run a check. So if I said I wanted to pay Mr Madcats they might say "did you mean Fred Madcats"?

I'm not sure what they would do if the account was in the name of Mr Hedgehog.

A largish transfer would probably be suspended for a while.

Woeismethischristmas · 21/12/2021 20:29

Depends on the bank.

Hellocatshome · 21/12/2021 20:32

Depends on the bank, sometimes now it flags up what the name is linked to the account and asks if that is who you want to pay. For example I needed to pay an amount to my sons football team. I entered the name as Town Football Team, it popped up saying the account number was linked to Town Football Team Juniors did I want to continue.

TyrannosaurusRegina · 21/12/2021 20:45

My bank requires the name, they match it and if it doesn't match, they don't let you proceed with the transaction.

VladmirsPoutine · 21/12/2021 20:48

Thanks all. I suppose it might be bank dependent. But I'd like to think they can't 'correct' the name, they might just say, doesn't match but would you like to go ahead anyway.

My bank tries to match the name with the account details and if it doesn't match it will warn you before you continue with the payment

Turmerictolly · 21/12/2021 20:56

HSBC says name doesn't match records with scam warning but asks do you still want to proceed. Not sure what would happen if it was a large amount of £ for transfer.

Redglitter · 21/12/2021 20:57

But I'd like to think they can't 'correct' the name, they might just say, doesn't match but would you like to go ahead anyway

Thats what First Direct do. If it doesn't match you can still go ahead they warn you that it's basically at your own risk if you continue

Wellhungdonkey · 21/12/2021 20:59

Mine won’t let me unless a direct match.

CommonRoom · 21/12/2021 21:01

Mine asks for an exact match with the name. Even a space or a dot in the wrong place will prevent payment. DHs bank is different. So, it depends.

LemonDrizzles · 21/12/2021 21:04

Recently I've needed either the exact name or pretty close
