Healthy start card - Retailer checks?

Just wondering, but with the switch over from the Healthy Start vouchers to a pre-pay card now that you just tap like a normal Mastercard, how do retailers know people are spending it on the qualifying foods?

With the vouchers they could obviously check, but how can they do that properly if just tapping a card they can't necessarily see?

It works for any food I've found

Our tills are pre programmed to flag up disallowed items.

Ah, so when you tap the card it is recognised as a Healthy Start one rather than generic Pre-Pay card?

Yes. And will flag up so assistant takes payment separately for your disallowed item
