How should it be pronounced?

OP posts:
purplesequins · 21/12/2021 10:16

spanish sausage Grin

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 21/12/2021 10:22

Chor - EE - tho

lborgia · 21/12/2021 10:24

I say "Chore - reez- oh" or similar, but I know a lot of people say chore-rith-oh .. which I think sounds ridiculous unless you're Spanish.

Interested to know if there's another option!

Mydogisagentleman · 21/12/2021 10:25

Red filth

PinkSkiesAtNight · 21/12/2021 10:27

Cho-ree-tho, with the emphasis on the 'ree' . I live in Spain and anything else said in English sounds silly! My grandmother used to say Cho-rye-zo. No idea where she got that from!

batmanladybird · 21/12/2021 10:34

Is there an accepted english equivalent though?
Eg I know how to pronounce parmigiano in Italian but I would still ask for Parmesan in the super market

So is it Chor eee Th o?

BorisKilledMyHusband · 21/12/2021 11:21

Chore eetho in most of Spain
Chore eezo in the South or South America.

BorisKilledMyHusband · 21/12/2021 11:22

What gets my goat is when people Italianise it with a pizza- style T as in “choritso”.

DrinkingWishingSmokingHoping · 21/12/2021 11:26

Chor-EE#tho
Chor-EE-so
Or, if you must, Chor-EE-zo

Never ever EVER Chor-ITZ-o!!!

TheChosenTwo · 21/12/2021 11:29

We say it as chor-eet-so
People sound so wanky if they pronounce it chor-eet-tho
Or
Chor-is-zo
Unless they’re spanish Grin

shivermetimbers77 · 21/12/2021 11:30

For some reason I thought this was in the ‘baby names’ topic when I saw it in the active threads list, and was very confused when I clicked on it, thinking ‘Chorizo? Surely not..’

Coconutmeg · 21/12/2021 11:30

Oh I’ve been saying it wrong with my
chor-ritz-oh then
I’ve got the whole family saying it wrong!

Hoppinggreen · 21/12/2021 11:31

However you pronounce it there sure as shit isn’t a T in it
(I’m looking at you Gregg Wallace you cockwomble)

drspouse · 21/12/2021 11:32

I say cho- REE- so because I learned my Spanish in the Americas but I'm just a poser.

DropYourSword · 21/12/2021 11:38

How I should is different from how I actually pronounce it. I’d feel like such a twat if I pronounced it correctly.

thatsallineed · 21/12/2021 11:42

Horeetho.

Grin

But quite believable that it could be judging from some of the posts. Grin
Oldraver · 21/12/2021 11:48

I always say the z, I think trying to pronounce like the Spanish do is wanky.
I also know how Mercia is pronounced and only go for the Spanish way in Spain (I cant speak Spanish but do think it wanky of me to use the English pronunciation locally)

DroopyClematis · 21/12/2021 12:48

For those who think it's pretentious to pronounce it the Spanish way, how would you pronounce 'croissant?'

Alarmset · 21/12/2021 12:51

How it's spelt in English unless you want to sound outrageously pretentious Grin

Same with croissant. They're worlds that have crossed into English. You're not speaking French/Spanish

TheLeadbetterLife · 21/12/2021 12:51

Shor-ee-soo or shor-ee-sao, but I live in Portugal ;)

SallyOMalley · 21/12/2021 12:51

Definitely not the way my dear family member says it: chorry-ITSY-oh.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 21/12/2021 12:52

No.

Seems to vary from Spanish speaking region to Spanish speaking region.

YessicaHaircut · 21/12/2021 12:55

I say choreeso. I had a boyfriend at uni who used to pronounce it ko-rye-so which was a bit odd!
