I've secretly bought a magnificent hat

I've been wanting a really nice hat for a while now. Was out shopping today when I found the perfect hat. I hesitated, because you shouldn't buy yourself things just before Christmas. Phoned DH to check... no answer. Reasoned that I know DH hasn't bought me a hat because we bought each other half a coffee machine each. I know DD hasn't because she's already given me a plant. That only leaves DS, and I'm fairly sure he hasn't got me a hat because he would have excitedly 'hinted' about it. So.... I bought the hat! And I wore it walking back to the car and it is MAGNIFICENT!
And then DH phoned me back. I explained why I was calling and he said, "DO NOT buy yourself a hat."
Oops.

I've hidden it in the wardrobe.
I can probably bring it out some time next year and no one will know.

This is not me, obviously. But it is my magnificent hat. It's very dark green, and sort of stiff linen. With a dark brown braided leather band.

It's lovely. You definitely did the right thing - no matter how good your family's intentions are in buying you a hat (and I'm sure they were excellent) it is hugely unlikely that the hat anyone else buys you will be exactly what you want! - and this way you can show genuine gratitude and joy for their thoughtfulness in choosing you a hat even if the hat they choose is awful, because you already have the perfect one hiding away for whenever you want it. Seems like a win win outcome to me!

I will be suitably delighted with the Christmas day hat, but I think I would always be cross with myself for not getting this one too, even if I have to hide it for a bit and wear it in a few months time.
It wasn't very expensive - from one of those little independent boutiquey shops.

I’m slightly bemused by your DH telling you not to buy a hat…? Unless he has bought you the exact same hat for Xmas, or you have significant money issues or debt etc why shouldn’t you buy yourself it? If the last two years have shown us anything it is that Life is to short not to buy the hat (or the shoes for that matter)! It’s a lovely hat, I’d be wearing it to bed frankly 😂.

I love hats. That one is great. Dh can’t have bought the same one.

Well I suppose if he and the children have got me the hat they think I want for Christmas it rather spoils it if I buy one for myself a few days early. I'm not sure he'd consider the idea of someone needing more than one hat!!

I have a hat similar. Mine is waterproof.
Actually I have 3 similar hats - in black, navy and green.
All waterproof.
Two are Jack Murphy and one is a German brand.

You were absolutely right to get it.
One should always buy a Christmas present for oneself. At least you know you'll love your gift to you.

I’ve got a very small head. I have to buy any hat that fits so there would be no holding back if I found one as gorgeous as yours in my size OP.

OP I’m so jealous. I’d love to wear hats, but I just don’t have the nerve and I think it would just be one more thing to remember. I have 2 friends that wear hats similar to yours and they look fab. Well done you x
