Why would someone have set up a near identical instagram account using same photos

Someone who has been visiting dd’s instagram account has set up one with a very similar name and using some photos of her. This account has no other photos.

I’ve told her to make her account private for now and she has two factor authentication.

But we can’t see the point 🤷🏻‍♀️

And they have over 1000 followers but only one post. Which is a photo of dd

To either be creepy and spook her out or it's just to generate content and they're just stealing loads and replicating including your dd or to catfish someone and pretend to be your dd.

She’s getting worried it’s the first option and she thinks it might be her boyfriends mum who is as mad as a box of frogs. Apparently the nstagram accounts have 2names. The first name of this account is my dds name but one letter differently. But the second name is a nick name of her boyfriend’s mum.

She should block them, then go through her account and remove accounts she doesn't know etc and keep it on private. you can report the stolen pic to ig, it generally comes down quite quickly.

bonfireheart · 19/12/2021 20:53

This is awful. Is DD a child and if so, report ASAP.

CakesOfVersailles · 19/12/2021 20:55

If it's someone who doesn't know her well, they probably use it for catfishing.

If it's her boyfriend's mother, I have no idea, that's bizarre. Either way she can report it to instagram.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 19/12/2021 20:57

You can report accounts for pretending to be someone else, might be worth doing if you haven't already

CovidCorvid · 19/12/2021 20:58

Dd is 20yo, she’s going to report it.

I had someone do something similar with a Facebook account, they pretended to be me and sent nasty messages out. They also told a woman I was sleeping with her boyfriend, I wasn’t he was disgusting.

Luckily the person talked in text speak, so no one believed it. They also took a screenshot of my profile pic instead of saving the image and use it that way. I suspect I know who it was but had no proof.

They could have bought followers to make the account look more legit if they are trying to catfish
AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 19/12/2021 21:09

Would the boyfriends mum know how to buy followers? What would she be wanting to achieve, do they look like genuine accounts?

Thelnebriati · 19/12/2021 21:13

Dont block them, it makes it difficult to find the link to report them for copyright infringement. Do that, then report them for impeorsonation, then block them.
Unless they've changed the system recently she'll need the URL of her original photo and its easier to do it on a PC.

This is what for me doesn’t add up. The mum likes to play stupid mind games and it’s something I could imagine her doing. She doesn’t like her son very much and as a result of that probably doesn’t like Dd. She’s cheating on her dh and her son is very unimpressed and has made that pretty clear.

But the buying followers doesn’t make sense if all she was doing was wanting to weird dd out.

The account has a profile picture which is dd, one other photo which is also dd. So don’t think it looks very genuine. I hope it isn’t a cat fish thing.

Copy their username, go to login and click "forgotten my password" it will ask you to confirm a partial phone number or email address. Cross reference that to boyfriends mums details.

CovidCorvid · 19/12/2021 21:20

But the mum is obsessed with Instagram and spends a lot of time on it.
