Cake - forgot the sugar

I made a beautiful chocolate cake today, cooked nicely, iced it, cut it, ate a bit and realised I’d forgotten to put any bloody sugar in it.

It’s got 3tbsp golden syrup in it so it’s not too awful but it’s also quite wrong.

Before I see if the birds will go for it, anyone got any ideas? I saw a truffle recipe that calls for chocolate cake crumbs but I’d have to add a shit load of sugar.

Could it work in a trifle? Will all the other sweetness compensate I wonder?

Ozanj · 19/12/2021 19:15

I would crumble it, add chocolate icing, and make cake pops

Hmmm, you've made a chocolate scone Grin

Trifle?
Nice flavoured syrup and too much cream or custard?
Toast slices of cake and dip in coffee liqueur?

Bread and butter pudding

I would slice the cake across ways and butter icing the layers back together. Should be yummy.

Cake balls!

Cake pops. Mix the broken up cake with icing and form into balls. Cover with melted chocolate and shove them in your gob.

Make sure they're gob-sized.

Excellent ideas! Thank you.

I bake all the time, I’m not sure what happened but I’ve never ever done this before.

Toddler DD thinks it’s awesome and ate a big piece - it’s basically sugar free, she can go crazy. DH took a bite, made a face and said “it tastes like cooked flour, it’s not normal” Grin

Looks like I can still use it!

Oh it looks divine! Would probably be delicious with a sweet cherry (possibly boozy?) sauce.

Pegasussnail · 19/12/2021 19:40

Looks delicious! Could you serve with cream sweetened with a little icing sugar?

AnneLovesGilbert · 19/12/2021 19:50

DH is mad for anything Black Forest so maybe a trifle type thing with a tin of cherry pie filling and some cream.

It’s the sponge itself that’s peculiar. It’s missing 175g of sugar so it did well considering, but it has a just not right taste so hiding it in sticky cherry cream stuff, maybe with some cake pops on the side has legs.
