Has anyone been to the supermarket today?

There does seem to be a new air of panic after Javid's appearance this morning.

I'm considering going to stock up on beer Christmassy bits earlier than originally planned. Is everyone doing the same?

I’ve been to both Sainsbury’s and Aldi. Both actually calm today. Well stocked too.

I guess that people now accept that they have no control over what happens and that taking a UK government minister's opinion seriously is pointless as they are liars who would do a u-turn in an instant if it made them more popular.

It was busy, but in a “weekend before Christmas” way, not a “panic buying” way. Plenty of stuff on the shelves.

Suzi888 · 19/12/2021 16:56

No. But yes, by all means encourage panic buying.

Elphame · 19/12/2021 17:04

Yes - my normal Waitrose was much busier than usual but people just getting a jump on the Christmas food shopping like I was.

Certainly no panic buying and I got everything I wanted and more. Oh apart from the Bramley apple and cream turnovers. Clearly a rush on those and they are my favourite.

rooarsome · 19/12/2021 17:11

No busier than I would expect a week before Xmas

OnAWinterMorningFarAway · 19/12/2021 17:13

@MonkeyPuddle

Been to Big Asda today. Just did my normal Christmas shop, not particularly busy, no queues at the tills.
DP went to Asda in the morning, said it was pretty quiet. DS went at noon(ish), said there were only 5 customers using the massive self-check-out area.

DP then went on to Aldi and says it was rammed. Presumably their advertising drive on TV for the 19p vegetables?

We went to Waitrose yesterday just to (unsuccessfully) buy a cheesecake and many of the chiller and freezer shelves were stripped bare there. One would assume that's a supply and staffing issue though as there was no air of panic or even mild peril.

ginislife · 19/12/2021 18:56

Yes and they made me queue to go in like last year. It wasn't busy.

Redwinestillfine · 19/12/2021 18:57

Yes it was rammed.

Moomarre · 19/12/2021 19:04

Aldi was usual Sunday levels of busy, then popped into M&S to look for something and it was really busy which is more typical weekend before Christmas

fastandthecurious · 19/12/2021 19:06

Yes and it was busy. It's the last Sunday before Christmas! I've worked in a supermarket for 6 years and it's no busier than it would be usually. Lots of people use this last Sunday to get last bits and a big shop ready for Christmas. It will also be really busy the 23rd, that's when loads of people get their veg. It's the same every year🤷‍♀️

ArblemarzipanTFruitcake · 19/12/2021 19:08

I went to Tesco and it was no busier than it usually is on a Sunday afternoon. I didn't spot any stock shortages.
