There does seem to be a new air of panic after Javid's appearance this morning.

I'm considering going to stock up on beer Christmassy bits earlier than originally planned. Is everyone doing the same?

I went to do my usual weekly shop and it was absolute chaos. People panic buying like mad. The car park was gridlocked. People were even queueing up for petrol, causing even more of a gridlock. Utterly ridiculous and so annoying 😡

It's no good doing that. You'll need to go back again, as you'll have drunk it all.

@soundsystem

I've just come out of Aldi and it was an oddly calm experience! Quieter than you'd expect the Sunday before Christmas!

(Planned shop, not panic buying!)

No empty shelves, no-one fighting over loo roll or the last parsnip, most people wearing masks and behaving in a perfectly normal, civilised way. All good!

Exactly the same in the Aldi I went to, was dreading it as assumed it would be rammed. Plenty of mask wearing too.

I got a lot of our Christmas food earlier than planned as DS2 has covid and I'm worried we'll all get it and not be able to shop (no delivery slots left).

maa32 · 19/12/2021 15:36

It was rammed! I went in to Asda for gift bags, gift card and milk and waited 20 minutes in a queue

A580Hojas · 19/12/2021 15:45

Like any other normal Sunday at my supermarket. Who are the twats panic buying?

luverlybubberly · 19/12/2021 15:46

It was completely normal at my local Morrisons.

DGRossetti · 19/12/2021 15:49

Yes, a third of people there without mask

I had the impression that mask wearing was slightly up.

Be curious if anyone has done an informal study of mask wearing versus shops to see if there is any significant variation across the UK supermarkets. (Once you've worked with actuaries, you find yourself wondering about all sorts of statistical correlations ....)

crazycrochetlady · 19/12/2021 15:52

If anything it's just people being daft - four family members goi g when one would do. I really don't get why a trip to the supermarket is a family outing! Cut down the numbers please, supermarkets, by insisting just one shopper per family.

tempester28 · 19/12/2021 15:53

I think it was much quieter that you would expect for the last weekend before christmas

BrilliantBetty · 19/12/2021 15:54

Supermarket was really quiet here this afternoon.
Seemed absolutely normal and well stocked tbh. Only thing they didn't have that I wanted was Kettle Chips.

Twilight7777 · 19/12/2021 15:57

Went to Asda literally 5 minutes in and out because it was like a scrum! Absolute chaos of people dashing here, there and everywhere. 5 minutes is as long as I could tolerate it

Bluebellbike · 19/12/2021 15:57

Yes. I have been in a big Tesco and to Asda. Neither more busy than usual. No queue at checkouts. Got everything I needed. Just normal stuff, not Christmas food. I already have treats and drinks for Christmas. Not even sure what we are having for Christmas Day yet. We have a family funeral on Wednesday so we may just have leftovers from the wake. Otherwise we will go to M&S food on Thursday and buy something we fancy which needs little prep, for Christmas Day.

oftenbaffled · 19/12/2021 15:58

Yes
Sainsbury
Lidl
Marks

All perfectly civilised

neveradullmoment99 · 19/12/2021 16:02

Nope. Very calm. No panic at all.

neveradullmoment99 · 19/12/2021 16:03

I mean I went today and just like normal.

neveradullmoment99 · 19/12/2021 16:04

If anything, this.
SamhainToImbolc · 19/12/2021 16:04

It was busy in Waitrose yesterday. Lots of people doing their Christmas food shop. No panic buying, that I saw, just normal food for Christmas. Popped into Iceland lunchtime today for a few bits. No panic buying in there, in fact it was very quiet. No need to panic buy anything, is there? There's plenty to go round as long as silly people don't cause shortages with excess hoarding of stuff.

oftenbaffled · 19/12/2021 16:06

It’s the weekend before Christmas

of course it’s going to be busy 🙄

oftenbaffled · 19/12/2021 16:07

The fact so many saying normal, as In my case, would indicate that it’s unusual insofar as it shouldn’t be normal the weekend before Xmas!

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 19/12/2021 16:07

Nope normal Sunday in our local Lidl. Threads likes this encourage panic buying. Please stop posting shit like this.

oftenbaffled · 19/12/2021 16:08

Yes I agree
I think mumsnet should take down any thread that are likely to galvanise those posters that are already highly wound up by COVID to behave even more…. OTT, and actually have negative implications for us all

Peakedtoosoon · 19/12/2021 16:09

Well I went, got everything I wanted, all ery calm and quiet.

I hardly think getting crisps and beer I want for Christmas, less than a week before Christmas, is panic buying.

feellikeanalien · 19/12/2021 16:10

Not been today but Waitrose was normal yesterday.

Decided to include a small frozen turkey in my Sainsbury's online shop in case Christmas is cancelled. Thanks to the joy of supermarket substitutions DD and I now have a turkey that will feed 8 to 10! Grin

Porfre · 19/12/2021 16:11

I went this am.
It was fine.
We just bought some essentials for the next few days

expatmigrant · 19/12/2021 16:14

It was a busy lovely Christmas atmosphere where I shop. No panic buying.
FFS stop the scare mongering.
