There does seem to be a new air of panic after Javid's appearance this morning.

I'm considering going to stock up on beer Christmassy bits earlier than originally planned. Is everyone doing the same?

Went to Morrison's this morning, really quiet. I got everything I needed and didn't even have to queue at the till.

FionnulaTheCooler · 19/12/2021 16:15

I'm just back from Asda about an hour ago. It was busy but not crazily so, the normal tills were queueing but I got straight on one at scan and shop. Stock levels seem pretty normal, the alcohol aisles looked busy but I didn't go down them because I've already stocked up and got all my Christmassy drinks in. The only bit of the shop that looked a bit bare was the seasonal aisle, so wrapping paper, selection boxes etc but you'd expect it to start emptying out in the days before Christmas anyway.

@oftenbaffled

The fact so many saying normal, as In my case, would indicate that it’s unusual insofar as it shouldn’t be normal the weekend before Xmas!
I meant normal for 3pm on a Sunday. I used a self service machine which is more for people who fancy some Pringles rather than panic buyers
Benjispruce5 · 19/12/2021 16:17

Even if there is to be some sort of lockdown, supermarkets stay open so stop fuelling the panic stricken mood!

AliasGrape · 19/12/2021 16:18

Yes, it was busy but I'd expected it to be because it's the last weekend before Christmas. It wasn't too bad and no big queues at the till.

gukvguk · 19/12/2021 16:18

Yes and it was just.
You're being ridiculous.

I meant normal for the time of year, not more so nor less so. And shelves fully stocked.
SuffolkDreams · 19/12/2021 16:21

Yeah they’re going to shit the supermarkets so we all starve to death instead 😆😂🤣

Youaremypenguin · 19/12/2021 16:22

I got my delivery. No substitutions so can't be too bad. First lockdown we just took anything that came and there were some really odd alternatives 🤣

Same for me this morning at asda
DahliaMacNamara · 19/12/2021 16:26

Everywhere I've been for the last week or two has been pretty quiet, even at weekends. I didn't go out myself, but DS went to Aldi for a few bits earlier and didn't encounter anything out of the ordinary.

IncessantNameChanger · 19/12/2021 16:26

I went at 2pm and thought it was empty and well stocked. Same in sainsbury's last night about 5pm. Not as busy as a normal weekend.

I'm quite happy to leave what I couldnt get in Lidl until later in the week as I dont think things will run out on the strength of today. I'm definitely booking a click and collect for after Christmas though. Pretty sure the chances of getting covid soon is very high.

Early? How late were you going to leave it OP? There's only 5 days to go!

There was no panic in tesco today. It was just xmas busy.

gogohm · 19/12/2021 16:29

Fine at Lidl. We bought some essentials 6 bottles of champagne 6 bottles of Prosecco and a trolley full of crisps, dip and cheeses. Student DD's are home so don't expect to have much left by Wednesday Grin (champagne wont get touched, they won't dare)

StyxBankDweller · 19/12/2021 16:30

@RaraRachael

I was in our local Asda this morning, It wasn't too busy but there were quite a lot of gaps in stock. Not sure if it's Covid related or pre Christmas.
I popped in early, all as normal. A bit busy as you'd expect before Xmas.

But PLEASE do not forget the main culprit for our shortages - it's brexit, not covid.

Whilst imports are a complicated - and due to get more complicated at customs as full full customs oversight comes into play in 2022 - we still have a shortage of HGV drivers who are now in the fortunate postition of going where ever the money is highest.

This is a brexit failing and this is obvious when you see EU supermarkets not having supply issues, also NI who of course have stayed closely aligned to the EU.

I'm off this week, so would have gone during the week rather than at the weekend, but quite, it's hardly panic buying

Btw I bought emergency Christmas dinner around 6 weeks ago, all frozen of course, just in case

SproutsAndCheese · 19/12/2021 16:31

It's the last weekend before Christmas, its always going to be busy. I did my normal Christmas shop, felt the same amount of busy as all the previous years. No air of panic.

Vargas · 19/12/2021 16:31

DH has just been to nearest supermarket, completely normal numbers of people and stock.

Panic buying is so 2020, yawn.

Pascha · 19/12/2021 16:31

Confused. Am I missing something?

I went into Aldi for a basketful of bits. It was dead normal.

No queues particularly
No missing merchandise
No panic buyers
No hoards of people

Just a normal Sunday.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/12/2021 16:33

I went to a small Sainsbury’s that has most things.
It was entirely normal, no busier than usual. No empty shelves.

Isitmeorthemm · 19/12/2021 16:34

Our tesco was busy but only as busy as usually is the weekend before Xmas.

There were no empty shelves, and people were calm and only very small queues at the tills, we were in and out in no time.

I8toys · 19/12/2021 16:35

Never usually shop on a Sunday but went to Sainsburys to pick up a gift I'd ordered from the argos there. It was busy but just thought it normal for a Sunday before Christmas.

PussyCatEatingPigsInBlankets · 19/12/2021 16:37

Our local Sains, Morrisons, Tesco and Asda all open at 6am.
Tesco doesn't shut at all until 7pm Friday like it used to, I love 24hr opening
I think the others are all open until 11pm each night.

Last year we did a 3am Tesco trip and had the whole store to ourselves (plus their lovely elves staff and some Christmassy music)

No need to panic.

They won't close the supermarkets.

People have to eat.

Scarby9 · 19/12/2021 16:41

MUCH quieter than a normal Sunday in Morrisons this morning, and for once all the tills were open. Bliss.
