It’s that time of year when I rewatch all of the Harry Potter movies, having a discussion with a friend about which movies were the best...so I ranked them

  1. Prisoner of Azkaban
  2. Half blood Prince
3 . Deathly hallows part 2
  1. Deathly hallows part 1
  2. Order of the Phoenix ( only because Sirius dies and he’s one of my fave characters other wise it probs would have been further up)
  3. Goblet of fire
  4. Chamber of secrets
  5. Philosophers stone

A general consensus amongst people I know is that prisoner of Azkaban is always top

So what’s yours?

My favourite for this time of year is the Philosopher's stone.

Just that discovery of magic and mystery really makes it feel Christmassy to me

LadyIckenham · 18/12/2021 22:58

DD is a massive HP fan.

I daren't get into the ranking, or we'd be there for hours.

Prisoner of Azkaban is always the top film, though.

FeckTheMagicDragon · 18/12/2021 22:59

I re-read the books, or listen to them on audible. The adult actors make the film (the child actors not so much)
Although Snapes story is heartbreaking and I adored Alan Rickman!

The Goblet of Fire is by far the worst book and therefore film. The whole concept of the triwizard tournament makes absolutely no sense.

CheesecakeHeaven · 18/12/2021 22:59

I mostly agree with you except me and everyone I know would definitely put Chamber of Secrets last. Can happily skip that one.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 18/12/2021 23:02

Ive never ranked them but prisoner of azkaban is my favourite

Apparently dh and dd think that the order of the Phoenix is the best

BluebellsareBlue · 18/12/2021 23:02

Currently watching DH part 2.... I just LOVE all of them!! I'm 46 and just wish I'd got my letter to Hogwarts when I was 11. Loads of my friends are like... eh? It's shit, it's for kids but I DGAF I LOVE HP!!

I’d agree in my 20’s, but oddly you identify more with it as you get older and you do need to think if your views are becoming stale or part of them are valid. She’s a clever woman.
Arethechildreninbedyet · 18/12/2021 23:04

I’ve always liked them anti chronologically.

7-1 are the best, Chris Columbus’ films are just the best for nostalgia.

Since growing up though I can’t watch them because they make me angry. I find Dumbledore exploitive, Molly Weasley a dick and Snape just a nasty, nasty man.

Ron’s a misogynist, Hermione’s too stuck up and Harry’s just an ejit. The books are far superior!

Shamoo · 18/12/2021 23:04

Agree that Chamber of Secrets would be last for me. Deathly Hallows Part 2 is probably my favourite, or maybe Half Blood Prince.

Basically just love them all though!

SirSamuelVimes · 18/12/2021 23:06

Oh yes, Azkaban is definitely the best film. I love that they managed to capture some of the humour of the world jk created - the way the Whomping Willow is used to show the changing seasons is just brilliant.

My list is probably:

  1. Prisoner of Azkaban
  2. Deathly Hallows 1
  3. Goblet of Fire
  4. Order of the Phoenix
  5. Half Blood Prince
  6. Deathly Hallows 2
  7. Philosophers Stone
  8. Chamber of Secrets

Interestingly quite different from my ranking of the books, except that Chamber of Secrets is also last on that list!

cpox · 18/12/2021 23:08

I used to be a huge Harry Potter fan growing up, but I can’t really bring myself to rewatch the films properly as an adult. Hate to say it but when I’ve caught bits of the films (background TV) they make me cringe at times - books were so much better 🤷‍♀️

The Prisoner of Azkaban was definitely the best film by far though!

Thatsplentyjack · 18/12/2021 23:09

Yup, prisoner of Azkaban is the best, chamber of secrets is the worst imo, but I still watch it if its on the telly. They rest I couldn't really rank tbh, I think the philosophers stone would be second favourite just because it's the first one and the book I remember reading the most, even although it was the first one I read.

CeriBerry · 18/12/2021 23:11

I’m obviously an odd one out here as I’d put Prisoner of Azkaban last every time!

WreathSupreme · 18/12/2021 23:14
  1. Prisoner of Azkaban
  2. Philosophers Stone
3.Chamber Of Secrets
  1. Goblet Of Fire
  2. Order of the Phoenix
  3. Half Blood Prince
  4. Deathly Hallows 2
  1. Deathly Hallows 1
Davros · 18/12/2021 23:19

I like Goblet of Fire best. Gorgeous dragons in the stupid contest and that lovely ball

TheValeyard · 18/12/2021 23:21

Every review or critique I have read says the series starts poorly and gets better, but I prefer the early films. I prefer the innocent, Christmassy style of the first two, and they lose me a bit as the series goes on.

The most amazing cast though - even really small parts are played by folk like David Tennant, Rhys Ifans or Frances de la Tour.

StormyCornishSeas · 18/12/2021 23:29

Oooo tricky but good thread idea.

  1. Prisoner of Azkaban - why it was slated by the critics and least grossing I don't know
  2. Order of the Phoenix
  3. Philosophers Stone- it was a simpler time
  4. Chamber of secrets
  5. Goblet of Fire
  6. Deathly Hallows pt2
  7. Deathly Hallows pt1- the snake/bathilda bagshot freaks me out too much to be placed higher
  8. Half blood Prince
joyinthegloom · 18/12/2021 23:30

Mine would be:

  1. Half Blood Prince
  2. Deathly Hallows 1
  3. Prisoner of Azkaban
  4. Order of the Phoenix
  5. Deathly Hallows 2
  6. Philosopher's Stone
  7. Chamber of Secrets
  8. Goblet of Fire

Though to be honest, the top 3 are pretty much equal, and my favourite depends a bit on my mood.

Ireallymustgetup · 18/12/2021 23:31

Currently stuck with Philosopher’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets on repeat alternately as have recently started DD, 6, on the books and won’t let her watch a film until she’s read the book with me. Think she is more excited about being able to watch Prisoner of Azkaban as her Christmas Eve film than about Christmas Day.

StrongerThanA90sTrend · 18/12/2021 23:33
  1. Prisoner of Azkaban
  2. Goblet of Fire (the graveyard scene was perfect. Almost exactly how I pictured it. Voldemort was terrifying)
  3. Half Blood Prince (think this one is the funniest)
  4. Deathly Hallows 2 (this would be higher if it wasn't for the ridiculous Harry/voldy battle)
  5. Deathly Hallows 1
  6. Philosophers Stone
  7. Order of the Phoenix (the book was to long. The film felt so rushed and felt like it must have made zero sense to someone that hasn't read the book)
  8. Chamber of Secrets

And I know you didn't ask, but here are my book rankings. I just couldn't help myself.

  1. Deathly Hallows
  2. Goblet of Fire
  3. Half blood Prince
  4. Prisoner of Azkaban (was 1 for a long time)
  5. Philosophers Stone
  6. Order of the Phoenix (the injustice of Umbridge just fills me with rage)
  7. Chamber of Secrets

Not sure why it was slated, literally most people I talk to hands down think it’s the best one.

Obviously the books are far superior, but nothing beats when your stressed and can just shove a movie on for a quick fix.

Queenoftheashes · 18/12/2021 23:49

Azkaban had Daniel Radcliffe attempting to be angry and teary plus the freeze frame ending, both unwatchably awful. But other than that probably the best film. But the films were all fairly disappointing. Hallows 1 was mind numbingly boring. 2 had the ridiculous head merging flight thing. I didn’t mind HBP, Order was fine, goblet had sexy men in it and the first two were just Christmassy practice runs for the small child actors.

WhatsTheEffingPoint · 19/12/2021 00:07

To me Azkaban is the start of the series in the book and film, it where all the back stories start to come in and the future films are starting to be laid out. The first 2 could be stand alone films/books but once your at Azkaban onwards you need to have seen the previous to really understand what's going on.

I've been listening to the audio books whilst quiet at work over the last few weeks, the books are so much more detailed.

dontgobaconmyheart · 19/12/2021 01:27

I can take or leave the films and I don't think I've ever rewatched them other than the odd occasion one is on the telly and nothing else is on. I rarely reread the books either to be fair, maybe I'm in the minority.

I wouldn't say I'm a superfan by any means but I do love it, and it's a real source of comfort to think about, I do listen to the soundtrack, bloody loved the studio tour though!
