Is your Christmas tree coordinated glory or a mismatch of decorations from the years?

Ours is so random, some from my mum, friends’gifts, dh’s kids favourite baubles. It doesn’t match….

I've got red & gold downstairs, silver & blue upstairs.

Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 18/12/2021 22:43

A Co ordinated mis match

Fleemeister · 18/12/2021 22:51

Our decorations are mostly picked individually, but there's a strong red, silver and white theme. The kids pick out an annual bauble each and it always seems to go with this.

We also have 2 ridiculously short random bits of tinsel that DD insists have to go on every year.

DS did a lot of the tree this year and put most of the figures facing inwards, which is really bugging me.

@morningwaffles it's from Etsy ...search for queen bubblegum and several options come up

@CorsicaDreaming thanks that was my 3 year old DS's choice

TravellingSpoon · 19/12/2021 08:04

Every year we have a tradition where we go to the garden centre and pick a new decoration for the tree. We have done it every year since DS1 was a baby so 20 years. Consequently the tree is a big old mismatch but it makes me so happy. Igs the only thing I was willing to fight for with ExH in my divorce. I wanted all the memories.

Imissmoominmama · 19/12/2021 08:14

A pp said that her tree was mismatched, so ‘tacky’. I don’t think mismatched trees are tacky at all!

I used to let my kids choose a new decoration each every year, so we have a real mix. I love our tree!

santabetterwashhishands · 19/12/2021 08:15

Mines got a right Mix on it but I leave it to the kids to decorate.
They love it and are so proud of their handiwork I'm wouldn't change a thing 🥰

@Sarah1417

When we moved out of my mom's I was adamant that I wanted colour and decoration coordination. So I did. The first year it was black and blue. Second black and purple. Third black and red and so on. Then we had our first little boy. I got a little more adventurous and started adding little characters to the tree. But still colour coordinated. Anyway fast forward to now 9 years later from moving out and 2 kids later and our tree is a rainbow of all the random colours I had years past. We've got all the kids little hand made decorations on there and any of the mac Donald's toys that come with a little hanger go on there too now. We've got little miss, Mr men, batman figures and little animals. It's great and I feel better for not being obsessed with it to be honest haha 😆
I was exactly the same when I first lived on my own! My first tree was all red and gold with white lights. Then we had a black Christmas tree. Now it's all tat that my lids have made at school, dinosaurs in Santa hats, a brocoli (WTF) and flashy multi coloured lights. Pre-child me would be mortified.

I still remember when I was the same age DS1 is now my parents had these lovely Christmas lights that were multi coloured and shaped like different lanterns. They were so tacky, but I adored them.

butteredbarmbrack · 19/12/2021 08:31

Team unthemed here! I remember my first Christmas tree after leaving home, and having to start from scratch with a job lot of cheap baubles.

Since then, like others we have added new baubles every year and there are memories on there from travels, and gifts (including a new decoration every year for our November wedding anniversary from my parents). We also have 15-year-old pre-school efforts, 1980s plastic baubles handed down from my mum, and the favour from my place at our wedding meal gets set in the branches.

My DDs also each have their own box of decorations which gets added to each year, so when they have their own first tree they will have a set already. Their tastes are evolving so the fairies and teddies tend to be a little hidden away these days!

IgneousRock · 19/12/2021 08:34

Coordinated one in hallway.
Mismatch in sitting room.

Mahmoh · 19/12/2021 08:35

We have two, a smaller kid's tree in the dining room with all their special/ homemade decorations on which I absolutely love. Then a more coordinated one in the living room, although my 2yo is doing her best to rearrange the carefully-placed baubles on a daily basis to make it a mess Grin

PanettoneSeason · 19/12/2021 08:48

I love ‘matchy matchy’ trees and ‘mismatched’ ones 🎄😍

DH and I have had a beautiful elegant matchy matchy tree since we moved in together 8 years ago. Lots of lovely baubles that we’ve picked up on our travels etc but they all follow a colour scheme ⭐️
We had our DC1 last year and he’s already picked some baubles to add to our tree and ‘painted’ a ceramic one (he’s 1 - it’s a mess and I love it 😍) - I can’t wait for our tree to become a mismatched beauty over the years 🎄😍

TheChild · 19/12/2021 08:49

Complete mismatxh of decorations collected the past 10 years. It's not a Next magazine type tree but it has so many memories. I love taking the kids each year to pick up a new bauble 😊

Oh, and no matter how hard I try the star is always bloody wonky!

Largethighsbadeyes · 19/12/2021 08:53

I have a colour scheme (white, glass and purple...but the purple is being gradually phased out) but the decorations don't match. We've added stuff over the years either from Christmas markets or made at home. Last year we collected a load of pine cones and sprayed them with a white gold spray.

Abraxan · 19/12/2021 08:53

A mix. The 'base' baubles are ,attached to a silver and green colour. But like others, we have a tradition of Dd choosing a new bauble each year - which aren't matched. Plus some additional ones - for example, a handprint one of my nephew when it was his first Christmas, some wooden ones made my someone I know in aid of a charity, etc.

The non matched ones involve memories of the time they were bought/chosen and me, dh and Dd will reminisce a little about them when me and Dd decorate the tree.

Abraxan · 19/12/2021 08:55

Attached should be matched

Tree is a little wonky this year - spent ages trying to straighten it as much as possible! And I need to sort the mat under the tree and add the light up present decorations, as well as start wrapping gifts to go under it!

CoodleMoodle · 19/12/2021 08:55

Mismatched and wonderful. We've got a box of coordinated purple and gold decorations, and then after that's on we chuck the rest of it on. We've got penguins, stars, peacocks, rainbow baubles, glitter baubles, stuff the kids have made at preschool/school... We've also got Duggee from Hey Duggee on the top.

I love it!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/12/2021 09:01

All the colours of the rainbow. Our decorations have been collected over many years. I wouldn’t call it ‘mismatched’ though - that sounds as if there’s something wrong with it! It’s just IMO a ‘proper’ Christmas tree. I’m not a fan of ‘themed’ ones. Especially not if it’s a case of people buying (or should that be ‘curating?’) a whole new set each year.

BiddyPop · 19/12/2021 09:10

Mismatch with things from over 20 years of gathering and from all over the world

But I curate those so that, for last year was mostly red anD gold, and colours that fit with those. And this year, I have white, silver and blues
Ones out.

DappledThings · 19/12/2021 09:16

Mismatched. Random ornaments added to over the years. Mostly reasonably well spread over the tree but with some clumping at child height.

Coordinated trees look sad and naff.

reluctantbrit · 19/12/2021 09:20

Totally mismatch. Some ornaments come from my parents, some are just packs of mixed baubles in various colours. Others are gifts or what DD made in school.

We also have the habit to buy an. ornament each year on holiday. So. lots. are memories. of our holidays and days out.

Jellycatspyjamas · 19/12/2021 09:21

Mine has baubles from all over the place, when we would travel pre-kids we’d always try to buy a bauble for the tree so we’ve got ones from South Africa, Peru, Mexico, the US and all over Europe. My sisters and I buy each other a new bauble every year too so the tree holds many memories including ones now chosen by the kids. I love getting the tree decorations out each year - it’s like opening a memory box.

rifling · 19/12/2021 09:22

Last year I had a colour theme which did look nice. This year dd asked to do it and she put everything on, all different colours, which I Iove too!

Mittenmob · 19/12/2021 09:22

Mine looks like Baker Ross, nursery craft time and Christmas in 2002 threw up on it as we never buy new decorations anymore and just add the DC 'art' to it.

wineandchocolateforthewin · 19/12/2021 09:26

Both coordinated. One red and gold, the other purple and silver.
My daughter has her own small tree in her room that is all her choosing
