Do you know you can now drive a trailer?

DVSA yesterday (16 December) changed the rules re towing a caravan or trailer. Now all licenses issued after 1st January 1997 can automatically tow.

This is exceptionally helpful for our farming community where we cannot get trailer tests for love nor money but I would certainly want some lessons personally.

Just thought this might be helpful to others here who I know were hoping for this change as well.

Info and full details re weights etc on gov site.

Although I have benefitted from not having to ever take a trailer test (I started towing before the test was a thing) I am not sure just being able to hitch up and go is actually a great idea. I know of several people who, in the days before towing tests, managed to turn at least a trailer of some sort over due to sheer inexperience - one time a caravan and car coming over the brow of a hill on a motorway, another time someone simply getting a wobble on and panicking, resulting in them tipping their horse trailer (complete with 2 large horses) over at speed, again - on the motorway. At least the trailer test ensured that every new tower had a bit of education before being let loose.

@backinthebox yup. That's what I mean about I would want lessons. My nephew was 16 last January and has a car test booked before his tractor test which is March!! He's been driving tractors for years.

Dh is saying you can also go straight to class 1 HGV without a class 2.... Another huge change
