How do you manage if there's a food you love that you just can't have?

I adore chocolate, have eaten tons of it all my life but I think it (and age) has caught up with me now and it just makes me feel awful. I've finally realised I just can't eat it anymore and I'm really going to miss it! Anyone else in a similar boat with any type of food?

Just think of it as lard. And don't go down that supermarket aisle.

megletthesecond · 17/12/2021 18:35

I have to sniff marmite. Can't eat it as it has gluten in it.

MrsMcCluskeysCat · 17/12/2021 18:38

Well I'm lactose intolerant so 'can't' have cheese which I loooove BUT you can buy lactase tablets which you take before eating dairy so I just do that instead Grin sorry that's no help!

Justkeeppedaling · 17/12/2021 18:39

I have gone right off chocolate. I miss old fashioned, chocalatey chocolate though.

PainterInPeril · 17/12/2021 18:39

I have a few food allergies....one of the most devastating things I had to give up was cheese. For the first few years I was in full mourning! I just have to remind myself that it could kill me...that's quite a good incentive to avoid it!Grin

I'm coeliac, coming up for 24 years now. I still stand and sniff real fresh bread, but there is so much I still miss, not least just going somewhere and just ordering whatever you want without a detailed discussion about the ingredients or looking it up online ahead of time

Phrenologistsfinger · 17/12/2021 18:43

Lovely fluffy bread, wholemeal pasta, proper fluffy cakes. Why is gluten so damn nice?

Brusca · 17/12/2021 18:44

Try the Meridian one.

Even my extraordinarily fussy autistic child said it's a good dupe.

Cheese on toast, or rather melted cheese in general in quantities larger than one mouthful. It makes me feel really sick for hours.

I'm ridiculously sad about this as cheese on toast with either marmite or Worcestershire sauce was my go to comfort food.

Luckily can still eat unmelted cheese

Fallagain · 17/12/2021 18:50

I have to give up all dairy, soya and coconut for 2 year, now I can have dairy again but not the others. It was tricky but acceptable because it wasn’t for my needs.

FireworkParrot · 17/12/2021 18:52

Bacon and chorizo. I no longer eat pork but these two make that really difficult as they taste so good 😂.

Beamur · 17/12/2021 18:53

I had to give up nuts a few years ago. Very hard at first but I have got used to it

FrenchyQ · 17/12/2021 18:53

I had to give up chocolate too as it started giving me horrendous acid reflux.
I miss cake the most tho as I'm egg intolerant.

PragmaticWench · 17/12/2021 18:55

@megletthesecond Sainsburys do an own brand version of marmite that's gluten free.

PickAChew · 17/12/2021 19:09

Chocolate and cheese both give me migraines, since perimenopause. Nasty puky ones, too, if I'm unlucky. I'm occasionally tempted by a nibble of good stuff and often regret it when I get ropey guts or feel lethargic. I'm also lactose intolerant so avoid all but small amounts of lactofree, and occasional incidental dairy, these days.

Littlepinkpeg · 17/12/2021 21:00

Thanks all, I'm just going to have to get used to it!

I had a stoma created earlier this year. I tried spinach, I just can’t and I used to eat a lot. Peas have been a problem, sweetcorn and mushrooms. I’ve bought a food processor to hopefully make things small enough to a) get flavour and b) make them small enough.
I desperately miss a Spanish dish, potaje. Big chunks of carrot, aubergine, courgette. I can get the flavour but the texture is wrong! 😢
