Doesn’t make sense - as pp said if you’re going to the theatre, get the tube.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 17/12/2021 14:18

It’s criminal, how much it costs and it’s killing the West End.

Weekends and evenings shows be free so people can shop and go to the theatre and eat out. We’ll end with empty shops and restaurants and even more delivery vans.
Add to that the tube strike and it’s an absolute catastrophe.

eldorado02 · 17/12/2021 14:18

Download the Your Parking Space app. Some car parks give you a discount via this app if you book in advance.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 17/12/2021 14:18

should

No, we don't want people driving into central London. If the OP is that worried about Covid, she shouldn't be going to the theatre.
ChardonnaysPetDragon · 17/12/2021 14:22

We might not want them, but we need them to keep the place alive. You have seen the shuttered shops and restaurants, presumably?

There is tube strike tomorrow. How do you think the shops will survive?

AnxiousWeirdo · 17/12/2021 14:37

Oh god no don't drive and park in central London! I park outside my aunt's in wood green and get the train in 😂

Use the other tube lines and the extensive bus network...

Have a look on Parkopedia and Just Park to see if you can find something cheaper but this is the car park that costs £28.50 for 6 hours (I'm assuming you won't be able to move to free parking after 6pm if you are going to the theatre):

expresscarparks.mystrikingly.com

It's on Kendall St by Marble Arch so you can avoid the congestion charge if you plan your route right. You can either get an Uber or walk to Soho. It's a pleasant Christmassy walk through the backstreets of Mayfair with the lights and the Ever After Garden installation in Grovesnor Square, if you want to avoid the crowds on Oxford St. It's about a mile away from the theatre, which is at the opposite end of Oxford St.

If you get a black cab though, it could work out more expensive than paying the congestion charge and parking in Soho. I would go online and check the Uber price at around the same time of day that you will be travelling too. It might not be much cheaper with surge pricing... There will be a lot of demand around Oxford St, especially with Winter Wonderland on in Hyde Park.

I get your point about wanting to avoid the tube. It's probably a higher risk than the theatre because of the lack of ventilation and why expose yourself to more people than you need to? Two tube journeys and you are tripling the number of people you come into close contact with, tripling your chances of catching COVID. I'd be wanting to minimise the risk of catching COVID before Christmas as much as possible without resorting to staying at home.

That has got nothing to do not being able to drive in central London.
TangfasticsAreFantastic · 17/12/2021 14:47

Depending on which side of town you are, I'd drive to Westfield and get the tube from there. Central line to Tottenham Court Road doesn't take long. I know they're supposed to ask for vaccine passports at theatres now, but I'd say you've got a higher risk of catching the virus from sitting in an enclosed theatre for a few hours than 12 mins on the tube from Shepherd's Bush.

Just mask up and sanitise.

I've seen Mary Poppins there and it was fantastic, so enjoy!

Holborn...red lion square, back streets of chancery lane....park after 6pm for free.

On street parking is free in the evenings and all day on Sundays. Saturday afternoons are free too in some places.
Blueuggboots · 17/12/2021 14:48

Park at Westfield white city and tube it

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 17/12/2021 15:03

ULEZ and the congestion charge are in force all the time.

Sorry, but none of this is helping the shops, the restaurants and the theatres.

The strike is on Victoria like, Central and Piccadilly lines, of course it will make things difficult, the congestion zone and ULEZ should have been suspended for the duration of the strikes.

Hollyhead · 17/12/2021 15:06

Another vote for Westfield White city. I have no idea how it’s so relatively cheap and quiet!

chesirecat99 · 17/12/2021 15:11

True, @ChardonnaysPetDragon, but the congestion charge zone ends at the end of Oxford St and a lot of modern, petrol cars are exempt from ULEZ. I think the traffic and slow journey times are what put most people off driving in London rather than the parking charges. Lowering parking costs would only make that worse. Let alone the pollution issues...

We are heading to Mary Poppins at Prince Edward theatre

Which is soho.
Or if we can park near ish and get taxi that's fine as well[/quote]
Was there a problem with the Chinese car park?

NotAnotherCrapHamper · 17/12/2021 15:14

As above q park chinatown

TuftyMarmoset · 17/12/2021 15:30

Yeah they try to disincentivise people from using cars in central London so it’s expensive on purpose. Get a taxi?

BIWI · 17/12/2021 15:38

With the recent move to WFH, as well as the time you're likely to be travelling, you'll probably find that public transport is pretty quiet.

BIWI · 17/12/2021 15:39

... and as PP have said, if you're worried about Covid, then I really wouldn't be going to the theatre! There will be no social distancing (unless people are no shows) and you'll be sitting in an unventilated space for around 3 hours. Far more risky than on the tube.

chesirecat99 · 17/12/2021 15:39

I think the problem with the chinatown car park is the price.

Peaseblossum22 · 17/12/2021 15:42

I would do Stratford and Tube or Newberry Park and Tube or the O2, actually I would probably train in to be honest public transport quiet ish

NotAnotherCrapHamper · 17/12/2021 15:43
