The premenstrual "coming down with a virus" feeling

Does anyone else get this?? None of my friends experience it and my GP hasn't heard of it either.

In the week before my period, I get short of breath, my throat/chest feels scratchy, my legs feel heavy, I sleep more and wake up feeling quite weak, and my usual exercise feels really difficult. It feels exactly like coming down with a virus. Then my period starts and it goes away.

What is it about the menstrual cycle that causes this??

Definitely feel the pain in my thighs, I felt this when I had miscarriages too so not sure what causes this. I also get diarrhoea just before it starts and usually during it, that only started after I had DC4 three years ago.

Hemingwayscatz · 17/12/2021 14:08

Oh and really bad nausea the day before it starts as well, that’s also a new thing since DC4 was born.

I was always lucky with my periods. But for a few days before i feel heavy and tired and have brain fog.

I’ve read it’s triggered by prostaglandins causing an inflammatory response and that taking ibuprofen can help.

It’s definitely ‘a thing’ and bloody annoying that GPs are clueless.

GingerbreadandJellytots · 17/12/2021 14:25

I have this but I also have endometriosis and been told it's to do with prostaglandins as a PP said I take Ibuprofen (I buy it but it's recommended from Gynaecology so kind of prescribed). It does help a bit but I do need a lot more sleep and not found anything that helps with that

TessasTesla · 17/12/2021 14:28

I too get this!

GingerbreadandJellytots · 17/12/2021 14:28

Sometimes I get a slight temperature, can't eat properly the day before my period I get so nauseous but also have hormonal food cravings for carbs and salt so one day a month I can only eat french fries, chips, crisps and pasta with marmite. It's a bit like being pregnant all over again, only I had HG then so at least I don't actually be sick with PMS

GingerbreadandJellytots · 17/12/2021 14:30

I sometimes take Phenergan with my period, not sure how it helps but does something improve my nausea and other symptoms. I'm not sure if it's due to the antihistamine side or antiemetic.

megletthesecond · 17/12/2021 14:42

I stopped getting the thigh pain after my hysterectomy. So it must be linked to the uterus not just the hormone release, I still have my ovaries.

SpacePotato · 17/12/2021 14:51

Yes, and the older I get the longer it lasts.

Like a proper head cold. I also get a 24 hour headache the day before. Used to be nose bleeds when younger.

Interestingly, my allergies and asthma are also worse when then too.

Wobblysausage · 17/12/2021 14:56

Omg yes me! I thought I was the only one! My friends roll their eyes when I say I don’t feel well just before my period because they must feel like I’m always ill! But I genuinely feel unwell and I figured it was just in my head! I’m so glad I’ve found this thread

Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 17/12/2021 16:52
