Our little town of Devonport Tasmania is broken, words cannot describe the pain everyone is feeling.

Please please reconsider the use of jumping castles, this was purely a freak accident.

R.i.p little angels.

Absolutely heartbreaking for the families.

Hellocatshome · 16/12/2021 17:23

Its absolutely awful, my children are older now so unlikely to go on a bouncy castle but it does make me think twice about letting any of my nieces or nephews go on them. I think these days there are plenty of indoor inflatable parks etc that I might just stick to them.

StartupRepair · 16/12/2021 19:35

It was not exceptionally windy apparently. It was a celebration day to mark the end of the school year. The year 6 students were allowed first on the castle.

guardiansofthegalaxychocs · 16/12/2021 19:38

It’s horribly sad. I’ve had reason to hire bouncy castles many times in the last two years (in UK) personally and for work, they all have set up the bouncy castle with weights and tethering, and have clauses about checking the tethering, cancelling in high winds etc.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 16/12/2021 21:23

I've just read about that before. It wouldn't make a difference when it happened but 9 days before Christmas really doesnt bare thinking about.

ImustLearn2Cook · 17/12/2021 00:52

Flowers My heart goes out to all the families, the children and teachers and community affected by this. Absolutely horrific. Flowers

Bussinbussin · 17/12/2021 00:57

Just awful. 3 more kid still critically ill in hospital. I can't imagine the families' suffering.

TurquoiseDress · 17/12/2021 01:15

This sounds so utterly horrible for everyone involved, I was reading about it earlier today, cannot believe 5 children have died and others critically injured Sad

Thinking of this town, the children & their families and all those involved in helping in the aftermath, it must have been horrific Thanks

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 17/12/2021 01:21

Sorry, Kylie83, this is such a sad incident.
I always check the tethering for bouncy castles and wouldn't let them on if it was windy. But if it was a school fun day i wouldn't even know they were on one. Was it a windy day?

INeedNewShoes · 17/12/2021 01:51

This is unspeakably awful. I'm sorry OP that this has happened in your community.

I'd quite happily see these banned. They're clearly not properly regulated.

This isn't an isolated incident. There have been deaths in the UK over the past few years due to these as well and in my view the benefit of a bouncy castle being a bit of fun doesn't outweigh the risk.

alexdgr8 · 17/12/2021 02:00

i agree with the comment about banning them.
there was an incident a few years ago here in uk, with an art installation, that people walked around inside, an inflateable; it took off and people were killed.
just not worth it.
we don't now allow lots of things that were done previously, re safety.

immersivereader · 17/12/2021 02:52

Absolutely awful.

RIP 💐

LoveFall · 17/12/2021 03:50

It brought tears to my eyes to read about it. I am so so sorry. Your community must be more than devastated.

I hope we all learn from it.

SD1978 · 17/12/2021 03:58

Utterly tragic, but also a very unusual accident I believe there has been about 6 deaths world wide in the last ten years, and it's all down to operator error. Feel very much for the poor families.

INeedNewShoes · 17/12/2021 08:01

I'm sure that stat can't be right. There have definitely been 2 in the Uk (and I feel as though even that might be more) so the number worldwide must be higher than that.

SD1978 · 17/12/2021 09:25

@INeedNewShoes - and Australian article stated this pre the current tragedy. ABC news article. All were operator error

StartupRepair · 19/12/2021 08:15

And now a sixth child has died. No words.

LoopyGremlin · 19/12/2021 08:31

Just so heartbreaking.

gogohm · 19/12/2021 09:05

Rip little ones.

My heart goes out to the families and the wider community.

Unfortunately every tragedy involving bouncy castles has been operator error, typically not tethering it in the way the manufacturer states in the manual. If you are renting one no matter how small you need to follow the instructions

DrDinosaur · 20/12/2021 10:06

This is utterly heart-breaking.
My thoughts are with the families, and your whole community OP Flowers
