Amazon parcels left on the doorstep

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/12/2021 22:21

Had to nip out this morning for about an hour and a half, and when I returned, 3 Amazon parcels had been left on my doorstep (addressed to me/dh).

We live on a really busy street and all the front doors are on the street, no gardens/gates etc. Its a busy bus route and next to a big park used by loads of kids/dog walkers etc.

I'm curious as to why an Amazon driver would do this? Previously if not in, they leave with a neighbour/take to a shop/try the next day.

When I logged onto the app, it said they were handed to Janet (not real name, and not my name). My address. Not handed to neughbour etc.

Wtf?!

Do you live on my street? Sounds similar and I keep getting the same situation. There have been a few thefts and some vandalised packages. I complain every time but nothing changes.

You’ve led a sheltered life if this is the first time such a thing has happened to you! In my experience you’re lucky they left them on your own doorstep and not a random address somewhere in the neighbourhood! Why do they do it? I’d guess because they’re paid to deliver parcels and the more they deliver the more they get paid so don’t want to get held up knocking on various doors or have the hassle of returning them to the depot or having to come back again later / tomorrow.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/12/2021 22:26

I've never known them do this. One of the parcels had alcohol in too so I would have thought they would need to check I.D.

I've a final parcel due tomorrow so I may ask what they did.

Yanbu to think that the ID check needed parcel shouldn't have been left but since the pandemic, packages on the doorstep is normal
Ime

What do you mean ask them what they did? They left the parcels on the doorstep.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/12/2021 22:34

So why say they left them with "Janet"? Whose Janet?

lots of our delivery people are so busy they seem to tuck and roll out of the vehicle bang on the door, leave parcel at the foot of the door and scamper back to the van with their little gizmo all in one movement, and before I have managed to find the blessed door key!

we're a dead end so usually I give them a wave as they are going by after turning at the end of the road!

santasmuma · 15/12/2021 22:37

It doesn't really matter, does it? They left the parcels for you and you got them.

TheFlis12345 · 15/12/2021 22:38

Some of our drivers do this. It’s particularly annoying when we are in but they don’t even ring the bell and just leave the cardboard box in front of the door in the pouring rain Angry so I only find out when I see the delivery email. I complain every time but it makes no difference.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/12/2021 22:39

But it's a lie. At least say "left on doorstep".

And yes, I got them. But what happens if people nick them off the step? Do Amazon re-send?

They are so busy and quick round here they will have driven halfway down the street by the time you could open the door even if you were in the next room when they knock.

I'm actually more annoyed about the way parcels left on the doorstep advertise the house as empty to any opportunistic burglar this time of year. Yodel does the same with parcels and the other week I was out on an evening and they left a parcel right on my doorstep even though I had designated a safe place elsewhere online. So thanks for that Yodel, everyone knew the house was empty for hours...

We had NDN parcel left in our shed, in the winter when we weren't going in the shed very often, and no card left at either our house or next door, needless to say we found it months later after NDN had already received a replacement.

We had a parcel for ndn thrown into our porch so hard that it went completely under the shoe rack, the parcel was in a dark green parcel bag so blended into the darkness, needless to say it didn't get found until a few months later when I was deep cleaning the porch, by which time NDN had received a replacement.

It must cost the companies a fortune in replacements.

The person lied so they could leave the parcels.
And yes Amazon would refund or replace and the delivery driver would suffer the consequences so they took a huge risk to get your parcel to you.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/12/2021 22:52

so they took a huge risk to get your parcel to you

Oh please.

They should have left it with a neighbour or at the drop off shop they use or tried another day. Leaving it on the doorstep isnt acceptable.

This happens to me every time. Luckily I have a 40ft front garden with a few large conifers at the front near the wall, so no one can really see them. Still annoying though.

Of course they should, not what they did was a risk. Save your 'oh please' - you have nothing to be moaning about here. You got your parcels.

I live in an area with horrific crime, Amazon left my £599 phone on the doorstep Grin

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 15/12/2021 22:56

Same here every time even if I'm in. I requested a safe place but it gets ignored.

KaleJuicer · 15/12/2021 23:00

@NervousNoelle snap! New iPhone 13 left practically on the footpath in SE London 😬

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/12/2021 23:00

Save your 'oh please'

My oh please was at the dramatic "they took a huge risk to get your parcel to you"

Makes it sound like they scaled the north face of the Eiger in a blizzard with an infant strapped to their back to get a priceless artefact to me with minutes to spare.

When, in fact, they just didnt do their job very well.

OP posts:
soapboxqueen · 15/12/2021 23:00

I've only recently had this and I'm assuming because I've left a light on in the house, they think I'm in.

So I've started turning all the lights off to make sure they put it the safe place.

It’s a ridiculous policy, encouraged by Amazon and other delivery companies not paying the drivers if they don’t physically deliver the parcel

No they risk their job was my point. They want the parcels delivered so they get paid.
