Amazon parcels left on the doorstep

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/12/2021 22:21

Had to nip out this morning for about an hour and a half, and when I returned, 3 Amazon parcels had been left on my doorstep (addressed to me/dh).

We live on a really busy street and all the front doors are on the street, no gardens/gates etc. Its a busy bus route and next to a big park used by loads of kids/dog walkers etc.

I'm curious as to why an Amazon driver would do this? Previously if not in, they leave with a neighbour/take to a shop/try the next day.

When I logged onto the app, it said they were handed to Janet (not real name, and not my name). My address. Not handed to neughbour etc.

Wtf?!

The drivers are under huge pressure. This all started with the pandemic, and is now even worse because of the shortage of drivers. They're paid a pittance to deliver hundreds of packages in the time allocated. Thinking they'll have time to take it to a shop if you're out laughable now. Unless you put that as your delivery option instead of your house, they simply can't do it.

Do you have a safe place entered on your Amazon account? If you have no garage and are in a terraced house with no access to the back, so have no safe space to register, you'd be better off arranging collection from a locker or shop.

Amazon are awful for this.

I’ve had items marked as handed to me when I’ve been 200 miles away. One day I’m going to claim non delivery.

The funniest one was a DPD driver. He took a picture of the parcel apparently on my doorstep. It was actually of his own feet on the road some 20 yds away.

They get paid about 50p a parcel and they don't start getting paid until the FIRST parcel of the day is DELIVERED so they've loaded the van and driven for no pay. It's a shitty job, and one that I'm grateful that people do. I keep a basket of chocolate bars in my porch for delivery people to help themselves to as a wee thank you for the shitty job they have.

NowEvenBetter · 16/12/2021 01:38

Have you tried using an ethical company? Elon Musks scum company pays their labourers per parcel, I wouldn’t fund that man. Did you not set up a designated safe place/alternative delivery location or time?

NowEvenBetter · 16/12/2021 01:48

*oops, I meant Bezos-same scum, different name

liveforsummer · 16/12/2021 02:54

I think you have to instruct them to use the drop off point instead. Personally I love it when they leave things on the doorstep, it's so annoying not getting parcels when you need them and in the case of Royal Mail, who have always just left my stuff in the past but suddenly stopped I have to get all the way put to the sorting office miles away or arrange a redelivery to the local post office thats a pain to park at and you have to queue for ages in the cold to be served by the incredibly rude shop owner. I guess your parcels good have been taken but they weren't so all is well. Yes Amazon would refund if they did

RavingAnnie · 16/12/2021 03:04

Literally all the delivery people do this. Even Royal Mail these days.

Sometimes they go behind or in my bin. I can't remember the last time a parcel was left with a neighbour or I had a card to collect.

Cascascascas · 16/12/2021 03:16

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

Happens all the time
Bit register a complain so that when your stuff is nicked at least you have this a a ref

thenewduchessoflapland · 16/12/2021 03:32

This happens to me all the time from all the delivery companies;they dump and run;the van drop bloke from Royal Mail never even bothers knocking.

Doyourememberthetime · 16/12/2021 03:51

You should’ve set your delivery preferences if you are going out! It literally gives you options such as leave with neighbour, leave in porch etc
They usually send you emails as well to let you know when it’s out for delivery. So you could’ve changed your preference last minute if you had to.

I can imagine it’s an extremely busy time for them and just easier to leave on your doorstep.

KatherineJaneway · 16/12/2021 04:47

This happened yo me too. I was pissed off as I was in and all the delivery person had to do was ring the bell. They didn't bother and left my parcel in the pouring rain.

LovelyJubblyBubbly · 16/12/2021 05:09

This seems to be a regular occurrence here. They often don’t even ring the bell and we have CCTV so we know they often don’t even try and knock the door.
They also say it has been handed to the customer or left in porch, neither of which are true.
I’m assuming that if a parcel got nicked then Amazon would have to resend but I don’t know if it would be that easy 🤷🏽‍♀️

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 16/12/2021 05:42

We bought a smart box for our front doorstep. Now all our post is secure.

Suzi888 · 16/12/2021 05:52

“But what happens if people nick them off the step? Do Amazon re-send“
Yes they do, because they make so much money. We’ve been lucky and only had a child’s poppitt go missing. I think the delivery driver is ‘allowed’ so many missed packages before getting a slapped wrist.

RumHoney · 16/12/2021 05:58

Most of ours now leave them at the back door which is fine if we've just popped out for an hour or two. But a couple of weeks ago we were away for longer. It was black Friday week so I ordered some things but chose for them to be delivered on the Monday after we got back. Except they were delivered on Saturday and it snowed heavily while they were outside. One of them was meant to have been signed for too.

canichange · 16/12/2021 06:08

I agree it's a bit rubbish, but unfortunately it seems to be the way it is now and probably won't change. If you know you don't have a safe place for them to leave parcels and you're not going to be in, just get them delivered to a locker a d accept you are going to have to collect them from somewhere.

That's what I used to do when I lived in a town and worked full time. I'd often be out when they came and I didn't like the idea of the parcels lingering around on the doorstep. I quite often got them delivered to my office because my employer was relaxed about that. Now I'm a SAHM and live in the middle of nowhere, so now I actually love it that they bung my parcel somewhere when I'm out!

Mummyoflittledragon · 16/12/2021 06:20

This. Well according to the article below it is 71p and rates have been ^negotiated down during the pandemic[ and this in the face of current inflation is insane. Drivers are under enormous stress. The formerly chatty / friendly Amazon deliver lady practically flings the parcels now.

If you want your parcels delivered and handled with a lot of care, the onus is on you to pay an appropriate amount. And that’s a lot more than either you or I pay with Amazon prime… which also includes tv.

GinJeanie · 16/12/2021 06:41

Yesterday afternoon, we were in and sitting in the front room. I watched through the window as the Amazon driver left a parcel by the front door. Didn't even knock and no card. I guess they're ridiculously busy and paid sod all but it's still rubbish.
My personal high point was having a parcel delivered and left in our food bin. It was dripping with bin juice 🤢

thelegohooverer · 16/12/2021 07:08

I wonder if that’s Janet of Janet & Roy mumsnet fame?

CovidCorvid · 16/12/2021 07:13

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

But it's a lie. At least say "left on doorstep".

And yes, I got them. But what happens if people nick them off the step? Do Amazon re-send?

Not if the delivery driver has put “left with Janet”.

I get parcels left all the time and they say left on doorstep. I don’t have a problem with that….I assume I’d get a refund if one was nicked. But I’m also on a busy high street and never had a parcel taken. A neighbour did but they had a Ring doorbell, caused quite a commotion on the village fb group when they identified the culprit!

pinkfondu · 16/12/2021 07:15

The drivers are u see a ridiculous amount of pressure normally, at this time of year they are overwhelmed.

traka · 16/12/2021 07:16

Because they've got 250 deliveries, if they don't do them today they get added to tmw

They also don't care if your stuff gets stolen

SushiGo · 16/12/2021 07:22

Rather than getting angry, which is pointless, because this happens all the time - buy a parcel box so if you're not in at least the parcels will be left out of view.

Mouseonmychair · 16/12/2021 07:28

What isn't acceptable is people ordering delivery of parcels when they are not in. It takes time to attempt each delivery if you are out you have delivered to your collection point. I would rather Amazon left my parcel on the doorstep and me not having to pay the price because some people live in a rough area.
