Amazon parcels left on the doorstep

Had to nip out this morning for about an hour and a half, and when I returned, 3 Amazon parcels had been left on my doorstep (addressed to me/dh).

We live on a really busy street and all the front doors are on the street, no gardens/gates etc. Its a busy bus route and next to a big park used by loads of kids/dog walkers etc.

I'm curious as to why an Amazon driver would do this? Previously if not in, they leave with a neighbour/take to a shop/try the next day.

When I logged onto the app, it said they were handed to Janet (not real name, and not my name). My address. Not handed to neughbour etc.

Wtf?!

As I have said above, I am typically always in - I wfh full time. However I had to nip out for 1.5hrs this morning. I didnt even consider the parcels (the ones addressed to dh I didnt even know where due), in fact mine was scheduled to arrive today not yesterday.

They are under immense pressure to deliver parcels. Have you not heard of them having to pee in a bottle because they don’t even have time to stop and find a loo?
I get loads of deliveries. Most do this unless it’s alcohol. They haven’t got time to be arsing about taking it to a different place. They won’t have known you weren’t in, they’d be back in their van! Asking them today about it is nonsensical. It may or may not be the same driver, I doubt they’ll even remember.

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

I've never known them do this. One of the parcels had alcohol in too so I would have thought they would need to check I.D.

I've a final parcel due tomorrow so I may ask what they did.

You know its not likely to be the same driver? So you will delay someone on a tight schedule for a low wage to ask about the actions of someone they have never met?

What isn't acceptable is people ordering delivery of parcels when they are not in. It takes time to attempt each delivery if you are out you have delivered to your collection point. I would rather Amazon left my parcel on the doorstep and me not having to pay the price because some people live in a rough area.
Actually Amazon makes this very difficult because they let you choose a delivery date and then often deliver a day or two early anyway.

Many other companies also deliver within 3-5 working days or something, so you don't get a choice. I wfh so I'm generally in during the week but sometimes need to go out obviously for appointments and errands.

@SushiGo

Rather than getting angry, which is pointless, because this happens all the time - buy a parcel box so if you're not in at least the parcels will be left out of view.
Because we all have spare money for parcel boxes.

I imagine "Janet" was invented so the driver could allocate a made up date of birth to for the age restricted stuff. They don't ask to see ID anymore.

DroopyClematis · 17/12/2021 14:57

I'm pretty sure that parcels , unless a signature is required, are left on doorsteps now to prevent close contact with the public.
Pretty sure Amazon send texts-emails about this.

They did this to me last night. The tracking said ‘handed to resident’ which I obviously knew it hadn’t been because I was in and nobody had handed me a parcel. I thought they’d accidentally delivered it to someone else until I opened the door and found them on the doorstep…

Drop down menus are ok if the options apply to you. Most of the ones I see say greenhouse/porch/back door; none of which apply to me. The best are the ones with a blank box where you can fill in your own option.

Amazon drive me mad atm. We live on a smallholding with numerous outbuildings, but it's quite obvious which is the house and where the door to the house is. I've had parcels left in our shed, garage, greenhouse, wheelie bin, top of the stairs to a annex, stables, the little 'eggs for sale' cupboard we have, on top of the trailer, in the lane outside the property, and on one memorable occasion a parcel was lobbed over the front garden hedge from a moving van. We did also, on one occasion which made the local press, have a building completely destroyed by an Amazon driver who failed to stop before hitting it when pulling into our yard. I am aware they are on tight time schedules, but I would happily pay more if it meant better service. Sadly, I don't think it would mean better service.I imagine the sort of person who finds it acceptable to dropkick a parcel marked 'fragile' over a hedge isn't going to suddenly stop being a knob because he's getting 10p a parcel more!

I had a pair of expensive UGG boots left wedged behind a plant pot in full view of a busy road by UpS - said package was supposed to be delivered Tuesday but didn't arrive and they emailed to say it would be Thursday.

They delivered Wednesday when we were out all day Confused

It's been happening here (London suburb) for most of the past 2 years. And some enterprising scumbags have cottoned on and simply cruise around the streets following the delivery vans and nicking parcels off the doorstep. Police not interested.

Sunshine52 · 24/12/2023 17:12

What a ridiculous thing to say. She got it by sheer luck and it had obviously not actually been formally delivered if it's left outside & unsecured. It's not right proper or professional and wide open to theft / agro trying to get it sorted.
