What is the difference?
Considering asking DH for one for Christmas.

From reports from those that own them, particularly sporty types eg running, apple seems to be better if you have iPhone.

NynaeveSedai · 15/12/2021 20:33

I prefer a Fitbit. I bought an Apple Watch to replace my Fitbit when it died and I regret it. Apple Watch is fancy but most of the features are pretty pointless and the fitness tracker element is confusing, cluttered, doesn't show steps on the Watch face and wildly over estimated calories so I've stopped bothering to track either. Waste of money IMO.

AdditionalCharacter · 15/12/2021 20:36

Fitbits are better if your wanting to wear it to track sleep and exercise. Apple watches need charged daily, which is very irritating.

BaconAndAvocado · 16/12/2021 08:20

Thanks all.

I have an iPhone 6, will it be compatible with the Fitbit or do I not need a phone to use it?

I love my Apple Watch. It syncs all its data to your phone. Depending if you have one with a sim, you can be contactable without carrying your phone - useful for me.
I don't find it confusing. It tracks everything I need it to.

pontiouspilates · 16/12/2021 08:32

Sorry to confuse further, but Garmin for the win for me!

This!! Although it really depends what you want it for. If you want to track runs / walks / cycles / swims etc and have built in GPS then I don't think you can beat Garmin. If you just want to count steps then Fitbit are fine.
BaconAndAvocado · 16/12/2021 14:16

I guess I want it mainly for steps.
Would be interesting to find out how much I’m sleeping too.

In my experience, Fitbit is better for health stuff like steps and sleep patterns. Apple is snazzier, better for music and texts and so on. The Apple battery life is just godawful.

Definitely Fitbit then. You can't wear Apple Watch overnight as it will run out of battery the next day. It won't show you steps on the watch face whatever settings you use, I have no idea why
emmathedilemma · 16/12/2021 14:31

I had a Fitbit Charge which would cover your needs.

NCnotmyusualone · 16/12/2021 14:38

Love my Fitbit versa 3. I use it no problems with my iPhone 6s. Rubbish battery (and price) put me off the idea of an Apple Watch.

MauveMavis · 16/12/2021 14:53

I'm getting a garmin for christmas as I'm aim ing to become a runner again....

Just had a fitbit versa on loan. It was good for sleep tracking etc. Can't do this with apple watch as it needs charged overnight.

MeredithMae · 16/12/2021 15:49

DW loves her Versa.

CovidCorvid · 16/12/2021 15:58

I’ve had a garmin vivoactive and a fitbit (think it was a charge 3) and have just got an Apple Watch. For steps, sleep tracking and exercise tracking I’d rank the garmin first then the fitbit and lastly the Apple Watch.

The garmin loses points though for the strap being non swappable. When it snapped I couldn’t replace the strap. Was so pissed off i bought a Fitbit which does have replacable straps.

The Apple Watch interface for monitoring weekly or monthly amounts of calories or steps is not as good as either garmin or Fitbit. However I do like the other functions such as Apple Pay, checking emails. The daily charging is annoying.

thismeansnothing · 16/12/2021 15:59

After having gone through countless sh1tbits over the years I really don't rate them. Their customer service is good though for when it inevitably breaks 🤦‍♀️ But Garmin. Tons better. I've got the 245 which does everything a Fitbit does and more. The GPS is accurate as it's not relying on your phone and only needs Charging every 5 days, longer if I haven't used the GPS often. Had it over 2 years now and it's still going strong.

I've got a fitbit, ( gear 4) it tracks sleep well. Battery lasts a week at the moment. Counts my steps, coverts to miles and counts flights of stairs too. It's the only smart watch I've ever had but I do love it.
emmathedilemma · 16/12/2021 16:02

I had 2 fitbits and never had any issues with them. I agree with @thismeansnothing that the Garmin 245 is a great watch but it has a lot more functions than the OP is requesting and a price tag that represents that!

Glitterandunicorns · 16/12/2021 16:03

Both my husband and I have apple watches and love them. We definitely wear ours overnight. My husband has a newer one that needs to be charged about every three days.
I have family members with fitbits and they seem happy but all they wanted was essentially a pedometer.

My husband loves his for swimming and I really like the exercise ring function on mine.

Glitterandunicorns · 16/12/2021 16:04

Oh and Apple Pay is so handy! It's great just being able to wave your watch at something to pay in a shop! And checking your messages and seeing who is phoning you when your phone is buried in your handbag.

dangermouseisace · 17/12/2021 17:27

My garmin has replaceable straps. I’m on my 2nd strap after the dog ate one- they clip in and out in seconds!
