Recommend me some decent netflix series?

I keep experiencing bad luck with the algorithm I think. A lot of what I begin watching cruises quickly into gross violence. No idea why as i can't stand it.
If I can't get out of that loop soon i feel like dropping the subscription.

Can anyone recommend how to get it to quit offering me stuff that looks cerebral but ends up really violent? For example i began watching a European drama series last week that was described as 'emotional ' 'cerebral' with imagery that looked fairly interesting. 5 mins in a guy tied a cow to a tree and exploded it. I am so effing sick of this shit.

I want cerebral, deep, intelligent - like crime dramas (but more like morse, vera or midsomer than gritty blood & guts), I also love mysteries, supernatural, UK and international drama...not so much US stuff.

Do I give up, or is there a way to solve the problem?
Any great series recommendations welcome, thanks! :)

Clique - British and very good.

You - first 2 series excellent, haven't watched series 3 yet.

Glitch - series 1 excellent, series 2 not so good.

Guaranteed no exploding cows Xmas Wink

If it helps, the stuff i have loved on netflix includes:

Requiem - ghostly bbc drama.
The Rain - Danish/Swedish apocalypse series.
The OA - US drama.
Glitch - Australian spooky series.
Black Mirror - futuristic thingy.
Inside No9 - UK black comedy.
Dark - German fantasy series.
Some Scandi crime stuff that isn't explicitly violent.

Also down thumb the things you don't like.

ChristingleJingle · 15/12/2021 16:48

The Queens Gambit

CrimbleCrumble1 · 15/12/2021 16:49

You may like The Gift if you liked the OA, obviously it’s not in the OA league but then little is.

To the Lake.

Have you tried the more like this option on Netflix?

beatrixpotterspencil · 15/12/2021 16:59

Thanks so much so far, these look good, am going to try 'clique' this eve!

I will definitely be downvoting, etc from now on. It seems i have unwittingly started watching things, seen people getting beaten to a pulp in first 5 mins then clicked off. The algorithm might have thought i liked it!

I have done that, but sometimes a crime drama just presumes you will be ok with another crime drama, and that might be a fairly grim one!

Not Netflix but Dalglish on channel 5 is a great little retro detective series that isn't overly gruesome (although there is an unpleasant force feeding medical procedure in episode 1).

CrimbleCrumble1 · 15/12/2021 17:06

These aren’t crime dramas but are good foreign dramas.
Ethos
Shtisel (no violence, sex, just brilliant viewing).

Mother87 · 15/12/2021 17:07

You can downthumb?!Shock

ApocalypseNowt · 15/12/2021 17:09

I like violent and gory stuff....can you let me know what you've been trying to watch recently (esp the exploding cow one)? Grin

latetothefisting · 15/12/2021 17:15

Borgen
second the Queen's Gambit
Unbelievable (warning - it is about rape but isn't gruesome)
mindhunter (it does feature serial killers but is more about their thought processes than actually showing them killing)

Mare of Easttown but I don't think it is on prime/netflix atm - on Now TV/sky if you have those? Same for Chernobyl.

OhGiveUp · 15/12/2021 17:23

The Chippendale's is good. I knew there was some scandal about them some years ago, but not quite the jaw dropping stuff that this series revealed.
Murders and all kinds of argie bargies going on 😯

I can't recall some titles, but the worst was a Russian apolcalypse drama in which a guy and his gf were brutally beaten with clubs - graphic- she was raped, etc. Other stuff included violence to animals or kids.

I don't mind violence unless it is painfully gratuitous and not helpful to the plot. For instance, i am not upset by the violence in the scandi noir 'the bridge', if that makes sense.

Thanks for more suggestions, am looking forward to seeing something new!
I have started to up and down vote :)

Have you watched Lupin?

I also like Dérapages, which has Eric Cantona in it.
