What's one thing your parents used to tell you not to do, that you actively do in adulthood?

I'll start: Sticking the knife in the toaster to pull out a stuck slice. I haven't died yet Xmas Grin

Oh and another. Ride horses. I grew up in a country where nice girls don’t and there was trouble when they found out I had discovered the local stables. One day in adulthood it suddenly occurred to me that I’d no reason to obey them anymore.

My mum still doesn’t know I ride now. As I was sailing through the air after being thrown off once I did think “oh God, if I break my neck, Mum’s going to be KILL me.” 😂

Staying on the phone for longer than a nano second.

Our landline phone was in the hall and I can still see my Dad pacing and glaring at me for being on it to chat to school friends! (After being with them all day!).

@PermanentTemporary

Salty tomatoes??
Tomatoes sprinkled with salt are really delicious.
trickytrudy · 15/12/2021 16:24

@ALightThatNeverGoesOut

Forward park and reverse out.
Same. I never ever occurs to me to reverse park.
teaandtoastwithmarmite · 15/12/2021 16:25

Mix alcoholic drinks- my Dad told me this from my teenage years and I still do it 🤦🏻‍♀️

trickytrudy · 15/12/2021 16:25

@Smerk how many unattended children are running around car parks? 🥴

starfishmummy · 15/12/2021 16:26

@MarmaladeToastAndAMarmaladeCat

Drink the milk straight from the bowl after eating my cereal. Apparently it’s very uncouth.
Or drinking the last of the gravy from a delicious casserole from the plate... I mean I wouldn't do it in public but just in the confines of my home
WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 15/12/2021 16:26

Go out in rowboats.

(my mother had very precise ideas about danger)

astockingforme · 15/12/2021 16:27

Elbows on the table

Nandocushion · 15/12/2021 16:27

Bought a brand new car. It was fantastic, and actually no, Dad, the 2 year old version of the same model wasn't 30% cheaper.

(It also has a back up camera, so no need to worry about reversing out.)

Bellafrenum · 15/12/2021 16:27

Run with scissors.

TuftyMarmoset · 15/12/2021 16:30

I swear by toast tongs. Mine are from Tiger. Much easier than a knife especially for smaller things where you have to reach deeper.

For me, eating with my elbows on the table Blush not in polite company though

Wonkydonkey44 · 15/12/2021 16:30

My grandma said ' nice girls don't go to public houses' this was 30 years ago so I became a barmaid !
She also thought long hair on women after the age of 30 was not right either, my sister is mid 40s has long hair !
When I think back she really wasn't very empowering Blush

Pinkywoo · 15/12/2021 16:30

"Smerk

ALightThatNeverGoesOut

Forward park and reverse out.

But why? Aren't you worried about children running out while you're reversing? Seems so much safer to reverse park.

How else do you get the pushchair out of the boot?

HoseMeDownWithHolyWater · 15/12/2021 16:34

I was banned from -

Getting a tattoo
Watching The Exorcist
Reading A Child Called It

I ignored every single one.

IntermittentParps · 15/12/2021 16:40

I was obviously brought up in a barn as a lot of these no-nos were totally the form in my childhood Grin

I guess maybe waste food. I was once told off for pouring a cup of black instant coffee away (hardly food at all). Not that I'm profiligate about it now, but I do throw away leftovers that no one has used up etc, which would drive my parents mad if they could see.

Fleemeister · 15/12/2021 16:40

buying real butter even when it's not Christmas.
Eating white bread.

I'm such a rebel Xmas Wink

IntermittentParps · 15/12/2021 16:41
  • profligate
Fleemeister · 15/12/2021 16:42

@IntermittentParps profiligate is a great word though.

Don't eat proper food if I don't fancy it - just eat dessert

maddy68 · 15/12/2021 16:47

Don't get enough sleep , drink too much , spend too much

Dilbertian · 15/12/2021 16:47

Not eat the bread roll and butter on the side plate at restaurants.

God knows why. It was my mum's 'thing', dad didn't give a dam about it.

But 30-40 years on I still get a frisson of rebelliousness when I do it, especially if I'm eating out with my mum.

MargaretThursday · 15/12/2021 16:49

Drink cola
Go out after dark
Sleep with wet hair
Go swimming within an hour of eating
