So disappointed with my Jo Malone candle

Very first world problem alert... I remember reading on here how amazing they were and that you can leave them in a room with the lid off and they scent up the room. Just bought one as a massive treat to myself and it has just arrived. I'm so disappointed, it doesn't have any more scent than a cheapy from Home Bargains or Lidl.

Was keeping it for Christmas, someone please tell me that when I light it the house will be filled with the smell and I will have to eat my words!

I have a mini one and it does smell quite strong.

lonsdaleshorts · 15/12/2021 13:10

Oh I had this last year with the White Company Winter candle. So disappointing.

Quornflakegirl · 15/12/2021 13:16

They’re nice enough but diptyque candles are stronger scents at the same price.

I have never been able to smell a scented candle of any type so I assume they are all a massive rip-off just to different degrees.

I can smell an unlit one if I get really close but from a distance or once it is lit then no, nothing.

Waste of money.

Shmithecat2 · 15/12/2021 15:00

I've just discovered Crackle Wick candles - in Home Bargains of all places. They're glorious, the scent throw is quite astonishing, in a good way!

CommonRoom · 15/12/2021 15:01

Serious question- could you have covid?

FrazzledY9Parent · 15/12/2021 15:02

I had this last year with a mini Diptique candle - horrible cheap scent, I was so disappointed.

Totalwasteofpaper · 15/12/2021 15:05

I think Jo sold the company and they have made cost savings to the products to squeeze profits changed the recipe so the scents aren't as long lasting.

If you haven't used it I would def return it.
Get your money back and buy something you love that feels like a real treat

Same here Here are my recommendations for ones that stink (in a good way!!) and all cheaper...

Albion candle company
Seven seventeen
Botanical candle company
Sand and fog (TK maxx)

Panacotta · 15/12/2021 15:09

Covid? 👃🏽

crispsarny · 15/12/2021 15:11

Should have got a load of the Aldi dupes, just as good, lots available online.

this I can't agree with- lit mine last night and it was beautiful!
Aderyn21 · 15/12/2021 15:19

The Aldo dupes are fab. I don't understand people spending more than a tenner on a scented candle.

sasbiscuit · 15/12/2021 15:27

WoodWick are great and smell with the lid off!

Lacedwithgrace · 15/12/2021 15:29

I have a White Company one and it's beautiful, Jo Malone was disappointing. I'm happier with Yankee candles than anything else now

RubyFakeLips · 15/12/2021 15:41

I used to buy them and didn’t have this problem. Maybe they’ve changed. Did normally need to burn it for a little while to really get the smell going but it was certainly noticeable.

I read a few comments about TWC last year, but haven’t had that issue. Can you return it and try another brand?

Puddington · 15/12/2021 15:43

I mostly buy scented candles/wax melts from small independent businesses I find via instagram now and I honestly think they are stronger and nicer smelling than a lot of the big companies -- and often a lot cheaper! I used to be a huge Yankee Candle fan but I think even they have gone a bit downhill lately.

MoonbeamSprinkles · 15/12/2021 15:50

I think it really depends how old they are to be honest.
So the ones that have been sitting around since last year won’t have a strong a scent anymore.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 15/12/2021 15:54

I use true grace which are divine.

My white company winter is such a beautiful Christmas sent.

have gone off Jo Malone and use Jo Loves which is her new company.

purplecorkheart · 15/12/2021 16:13

I got a few mini ones from the Advent Box a few years ago. I did find that the strength of the scent varied with the candle type. Some were way more strong than others. To be honest though I think they are overhyped and overpriced. Particularly since Jo Malone sold the company.

sunnyandshare · 15/12/2021 16:32

Thanks for the replies. Definitely not COVID, my Home Bargains candle is smelling lovely right now. I'll light it and hopefully it will redeem itself.

Lanique · 15/12/2021 16:41

Have you not lit it yet op??

My JM candles have always been pretty good, and no matter what people say they really are nicer than the Aldi dupes!

My most disappointing was Spiritus Sancti by Cire Trudon. Gorgeous smell but so, so light. I'll never spend £75 on one again!!

carlyswirly · 15/12/2021 20:10

Was in space nk at the weekend sniffing candles. Dp and I judged the jo loves range as most overpriced and blandly packaged. They were not strong smelling.

I'd intended buying the diptyque Sapin before we went but it smelled like a pile of damp leaves and I ended up with the biscuit one instead, which is beautiful.
