What do people in the infantry do all day?

When not on active service.

I don't know anyone military, so just curious. Specialist's have a 'day job' as well as the military stuff. But what do standard squaddies do all day? I'm guessing they do stuff to keep them fit, practise marching drills, weapons practice, and cleaning uniforms etc - but that surely only takes 3-4 hours a day once theyve passed basic training? What else do they do? What actually is their day to day job when they're in the UK?

It's no doubt a very stupid question, but all I know about the army is from watching documentaries on basic training.

I'm curious as all the recruitment ads make it look incredibly exciting fun stuff all day long. But I wonder if this is a bit of a con and it's pretty tedious most of the time, like a lot of jobs.

I’m intrigued too.

Not much is the answer!

DH is in the army, although not Infantry.

I imagine while not on operations they will spend most of the time maintaining equipment and vehicles, going on course and exercises, being on guard on the gate into camp etc

A relative was a (soloist) bagpiper in the Scots guards. He piped at several royal functions and also toured the UK as part of army recruitment events.

Mundane stuff most of the time when not on exercise or on deployments.
Physical training, maintenance, weapon training, sports, and lots of cleaning/ tidying up.
