Would you report cocaine use at the Christmas party?

A member of staff was seen using and offered it to others too.

It's not something I do and I'd think it completely inappropriate. I wasn't there, but I'm not sure I'd have reported it.

It has been reported and staff member is suspended pending an investigation.

Would you have reported?

Yes of course.

FTEngineerM · 15/12/2021 12:09

Maybe you can’t see what I typed, because that is clearly not what I said 🥲.

Simply highlighting the irony, you should be angry about both; the fact you powder your face with mica that breeds exploitation and the fact that you’re currently using a device that requires chemicals that breed exploitation.

Not just about someone’s Coke habit.

ArblemarzipanTFruitcake · 15/12/2021 12:09

Yes I would report - thinking of the wider picture and crimes that are facilitated by drug trafficking.

TuftyMarmoset · 15/12/2021 12:10

@FTEngineerM

There's no fair trade in cocaine. Put the death, devastation and exploitation that lies behind it out of your mind as much as you like but it's the reality.

You could substitute cocaine in that paragraph for: diamonds, palm oil, oil, coal, lithium… etc

The list goes on, do you feel the impact of every exploitation that has occurred to get you that electronic device you’re tapping away on. With your mica encrusted face?

So because other things are unethical we should just turn a blind eye to illegal drugs? Of course not, we should be cracking down on all of these. Also, none of those are brought to you by exploited British schoolchildren, whom teachers have a particular duty towards.

A good point.

Unless you never have anything with palm oil, chocolate, cashews or hazelnuts, soya, prawns etc without checking they're legitimately from sources that don't rely on modern slavery, child abuse and human rights breaches...

Unless you never wear clothes made on the high street without checking their human rights credentials first. Never worn a piece of jewellery without checking the source of its gemstone. Never order from Amazon, or buy a car (aluminium mining has a dreadful human rights record)...

...then your stance on cocaine is probably based off a "drugs bad!!!" moral kneejerk reaction rather than anything else.

And fine, you don't have to like drugs. And we should all strive to make less of an impact. But the moralising about one specific thing is a bit much.

I wouldn’t report it, but if I saw said colleague I’d go and tell them to put it away and remind them their career as a teacher would be over if caught.

FTEngineerM · 15/12/2021 12:20

Ah, my bad, I didn’t realise the only important children were British..

Your point was… if you use Nutella, it’s OK for me snort coke

No it wasn’t, it was that there is a lot of people on a high horse about one particular chemical on their device that literally causes the same. It was ironic, to me at least.

Furries · 15/12/2021 12:21

Blimey, there’s some real stretching going on here.

“Judging” a teacher (or social worker/surgeon/police officer etc etc) for owning a tablet or wearing makeup is very different to judging them for being stupid enough to use and offer cocaine at a work do. In their own time, with their own circle of friends - not great, but each to their own. At a work do - shows a real lack of boundaries.

Like it or not, there are certain careers where boundaries are really important.

Obviously all children matter, but British teachers are directly responsible for the safeguarding of British children. And it’s those British children that they are responsible for, that get caught up in county lines selling drugs, not palm oil.
LaBellina · 15/12/2021 12:47

I’m going to get flamed for this but to be very honest, I would depend on who was doing it.
I have had to deal with an awful colleague in the past, she even falsely accused me of theft in the presence of others and got away with it. I would have rubbed my hands with glee if she had done something like that and happily reported her.

If it was someone I could well get along with, I would be disappointed in their lack of morals but I wouldn’t report them, because I would worry how it would backfire on me and my career. Sometimes to protect your own interests at work it’s better to stay out of these things even though in an ideal world I would like this issue to be addressed.

There's loads of horrible corruption and exploitation in the world. You all claim to care about animal welfare and the environment no doubt? But bet you all eat factory farmed meat. Avocado production is pretty fraught with gang corruption and cruelty these days!

Also the HUGE generalisation that due to their vulnerability heroin dependent people (drug organisations and charities refrain from using the word addict these days) are "ok" but cocaine users aren't? I've met plenty of selfish callous users of heroin in my time! You've all fallen for the stereotypes. And for those of you who say they don't know or mix with people who've used cocaine. You have/do. You just don't know it. It's pretty prolific, not saying that makes it right, but it is..

TheWeeDonkey · 15/12/2021 12:57

Its nice to see who are the coke heads on this thread

JuergenSchwarzwald · 15/12/2021 12:59

I would absolutely report it, yes. Both to the employer and to the police.

Cocaine use is not ok, whatever some people think. And yes, eating foods with palm oil in isn't ok either, but it's not illegal.

Although it is astonishing that they were confident enough in their choices that they would take it in public!

christmaspavlova · 15/12/2021 13:01

Personally, I would not get involved. I have enough common sense not to do drugs.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 15/12/2021 13:01

I'm not a sanctimonious twat

I am when it comes to illegal drug use. Especially by those who should know better.

(... and the sanctimonious twats! Mumsnet cliche number 14 - when someone tells you who they are you should listen carefully Grin)

The things cartels do to innocent people would make you vomit. But apparently it's ok to use the cartels products because...

Well actually no one can answer why they think that's ok

I don’t eat meat. And I didn’t say heroin was ok, just that I would have more sympathy given the likely differences in background of someone who is dependant on heroin vs a professional taking coke at a party.

@Wedding12000

What if it was a teachers husband doing it? What should she do? Would there be consequences?
What does a husband have to do with any of it?

Private party? No.
Work do. Yes. I think if you are stupid enough to offer colleagues cocaine at a work event, you deserve it!
