Easy mobile phone to use?

I bought a mobile phone for a relative to use that I thought was easy, but I get complaints all the time that she cant use it.
Can anyone recommend an easy phone to use. She wont use one styled for the elderly with big buttons, and she wants an ordinary size mobile rather than a larger one. She can use an iPad easily, but anything a tiny bit complex IT wise fazes her.
She will only use it for the phone, texts, to google things and for email. Maybe maps occasionally.
If anyone has any ideas I would be really grateful. Thanks.

I would go for an iPhone as it will be almost identical to her iPad in the way you use it and could also be synced with it.

If she can use an iPad then an iPhone will be familiar to her

What iphone would you go for? There seems so much choice.
