How do I negotiate a bad job by tradie?

Not paid him to tile my kitchen floor.
Fitted the few tiles in a few hours and looked ok from afar but close up it was bumpy (they didn’t meet the the corners to the same level).

Told him and he removed 12 tiles… I had no more spares.

Allowed him to finish (as agreed) and now can feel the uneven tiles and it’s a pretty poor job.

He’s expecting payment. What do I do?

No way would I pay him £400. It’s wrecked my tiles (as in they can’t be removed now), that a cost to me. Job poor.

Tell him you can't pay him because you're going to have to pay someone else to redo it.

Was your floor uneven to start with ?

Floors are always uneven, hence why self levelling compounds are used

So if he hasn't prepped it correctly it's an error on his part so I wouldn't pay him - at least not 400 quid.
