What to watch in Londons West End?

SummaLuvin · 14/12/2021 12:30

Any advice on what to watch during a trip to London DH & I have in the Spring? We would have loved to see Cabaret but were not on it with buying tickets and they have all gone for our dates. Any advice or experiences or recommendations would be great, I have put below what we are thinking and considering, already seen and loved Hamilton.

Top Contenders
Dear Evan Hansen
Come From Away
Woman in Black - wildcard as I'm not normally into scary and typically go for musicals

Other Options
Phantom of the Opera
& Juliet
The Prince of Egypt

I didn’t really enjoy Dear Evan Hansen much, I would choose Cone From Away from your list. Have you seen Les Miserables?

Shoxfordian · 14/12/2021 12:32

I loved Dear Evan Hansen and Come from away

Also recommend the Book of Mormon

Sunsetsupernova · 14/12/2021 12:33

I am desperate to see Come From Away. I’ve not heard anything but praise for it. I saw &Juliet recently and absolutely loved it. However I think it’s a bit more of a night out with the girls kind of show. I’m not sure DP would have been that impressed with it.

Personally, I think Woman in black is brilliant.

I found a lot of Phantom a bit boring and disappointing.

Would love to see Prince of Egypt, though.

Scraggythang · 14/12/2021 12:36

Book of Mormon is brilliant, but not for the faint hearted.

Trisolaris · 14/12/2021 12:37

I’d go for Dear Evan Hansen or Come From Away - loved them both!

SummaLuvin · 14/12/2021 12:38

@Haus1234 Not seen Les Mis, that is on my list, but it's touring not too far from where we live this year, so don't feel the need to go to the West End to see it. Do you mind saying what it was you didn't like about Dear Evan Hansen?

I have seen alot of good things about Book of Mormon, but also enough negative for me to worry it might not be my sense of humour, I think that is touring too, so might be less risky to see if I can catch it regionally and cheaply!

@Sunsetsupernova worth knowing that about &Juliet, I saw SIX recently on a girls night and LOVED it, maybe thats for next time.

I loved Come from Away, Prince of Egypt was fine but nothing to write home about. Other highlights for me have been Hamilton and Book of Mormon. Hope you enjoy whatever you choose!

sunshinelover69 · 14/12/2021 12:41

Another vote for Book of Mormon but depends on your sense of humour. Also saw Back to the Future a couple of weeks ago and it was really good - a must see if you're a fan of the film.

coolcahuna · 14/12/2021 12:42

Come from Away left me with goosebumps and I saw it 3 years ago now it's amazing

Greentime101 · 14/12/2021 12:49

Come from away was such a lovely lovely show - highly recommend

Shoxfordian · 14/12/2021 12:52

Come from away is on Apple TV if anyone wants to see it

Fuzzysocksies · 14/12/2021 12:53

Dear Evan Hansen has some great songs and interesting staging, but the plot is a bit meh and there are definitely many shows I’d choose over seeing it again. And I went in as a fan of the soundtrack and full knowledge of the story!

Come From Away I saw a few years back with basically zero idea of what it was about and absolutely loved it, really interesting show and great performance. Highly recommend.

Haus1234 · 14/12/2021 13:03

@SummaLuvin DEH had some good songs but also some more boring ones (as most shows do!) - I just felt the plot was a bit thin and moralistic. Perhaps if you either are a teenager or parent teenagers you might take more away from it.

Haus1234 · 14/12/2021 13:04

It’s certainly not in the same league as Hamilton!

SummaLuvin · 14/12/2021 13:06

Thanks @Haus1234 I appreciate that. This thread is definitely steering me towards CFA.

Come From Away is brilliant.

Isn't Prince of Egypt closing very soon? I didn't love it, but others I know really did.

Six is also great. The Play That Goes Wrong is very funny if you want something other than a musical. I like the Woman in Black. I used to work just opposite and you could hear when there were school groups in as the screaming was so loud! It's well done.

Have heard The Ocean At The End of the Lane is brilliant but I haven't seen it so don't know for sure.

overthethamesfromyou · 14/12/2021 13:27

Have you seen Hamilton?

MrsPatrickDempsey · 14/12/2021 13:49

Frozen is an incredible piece of musical theatre.
Dear Evan is v contemporary with a great score
Hamilton is original with a great score too

Petal12 · 14/12/2021 13:59

I would totally recommend Six - went not really having any idea of what it was about (other than Henry’s wives) but came away loving it and downloading the soundtrack!

SummaLuvin · 14/12/2021 18:07

@Petal12 I have seen SIX and this time we want to watch something new to us both, but I wholeheartedly agree! I came out with the biggest smile on my face, singing the songs, and thinking 'when can I see this again!' I was listening to the soundtrack on the train home the next day.

I would choose Come from Away from your list - it’s fantastic, I would love to see it again.
Phantom and Prince of Egypt are ok but I wouldn’t see either again.

Hbh17 · 14/12/2021 18:16

Definitely "Come From Away" - I've seen it twice, & can't wait to go again!

"Dear Evan Hansen" would make a good play, but as a musical it really doesn't work.

Nonicknamesforcatapillars · 14/12/2021 19:41

We watched Cinderella in the summer and LOVED it.

I think I’d go for dear Evan Hanson from your list. I’ve not seen it, but I like the score and it’s on my list of things to see.

thingscouldbemarvellous · 14/12/2021 19:46

& Juliet is amazing
