Who do you tip?

Who should you tip at Christmas? I have this dilemma whether to tip the postman, binman, hairdresser.... and how much??

OP posts:

I don't tip the postman or the binman because I'm in a big city and I don't always get the same one. I normally tip 8-10% at the hairdresser's but will probably do up to 15% next week, or just add a fiver in, whatever spare cash I have on me that day.

MrsDThomas · 13/12/2021 20:58

Absolutely no one. I don’t get this tipping idea.

Sn0tnose · 13/12/2021 21:16

I tip my hairdresser and nail technician probably about 15%, but I do that every time I see them.

I’d be happy to tip the bin men but I’m never here when they come. Our postwoman is up and down the street like greased lightening, so I’d have to be pretty quick to catch her. I did buy chocolates for the Hermes courier though, because she is bloody brilliant.

We do 'Christmas boxes" (can anyone remember why they're called that?) For regular bins, recycling bins, green waste bins, milkman and postie. We tip take aways, we don't go to salons but there I felt conflicted, I felt I ought to tip but that the cost for the service was already high, but I never feel conflicted at a restaurant. I don't know why.

Sparklingbrook · 13/12/2021 21:22

Nobody.

androiduser · 13/12/2021 21:40

Never tip the hairdresser far too expensive as it is.

Gone are the days of one lot of bin collectors and with various teams covering different waste it's a bit too much.

Couriers are more likely to receive a cold drink in the summer than a tip at Christmas and again I don't just have one delivery person.

Postie is also a no.

Restaurants where service has been good will get a tip regardless of time of year.

I'm more inclined to give to charity over Christmas period although try to do a small amount each month anyway, however given 4 x as much so far this month.

Other than that teaching staff will always get a gift if that is considered a tip.

coffeerevelsrock · 13/12/2021 21:58

I've just tipped the window cleaner because he's new and the only one I've ever had who seems to want to get the windows clean. They've never been shinier - didn't know windows did that!

Always tip hairdresser about 15% and very rarely see postie or binmen so wouldn't know how to go about it if I wanted to.

I don't tip anyone, when I was a student and did bar work I always found it really weird being tipped and in some of the places I worked we weren't allowed to keep individual tips anyway they had to be collated and shared out.

My DH thinks I am the worst person ever for not tipping my hairdresser (his Mum used to be one) but I'm paying around the £100 mark for my hair so why should I then tip? It doesn't make sense to me but then none of it does.

CarButtonCloth · 13/12/2021 22:43

Nobody. Don't have one regular binman, delivery driver, postman etc and can't remember the last time I went to the hairdresser.

Newduvet · 13/12/2021 23:58

Hairdresser, nail tech, postie (coz he is great), every take away delivery driver.

BurntO · 14/12/2021 00:00

No one..

grapewine · 14/12/2021 00:04

No one. I pay the hairdresser her advertised price, on the rare occasion that I go, and we don't have the same binman.

Thatsplentyjack · 14/12/2021 09:29

My post man changes all the time, same with the bin men and there are 3 different bin collections here with at least 3 guys every collection. I won't tip my window eager because I don't actually like him. I went to the hairdressers weeks ago and won't be back till the new year. Never even thought about a Christmas tip while I was there, bit indid tip her. I'll tip my lash extension lady tonight, about 20% of the cost of the lashes. Iight get my nails done next week and maybe give a couple of pound tip depending how mi h they cost (I never get my nails done anymore so don't have one regular person). Dp always leaves a tip in restaurants (not that we go out much anymore) no matter how shit the service has been. The heroes delivery woman is a good idea though. That poor woman is never away from my door.

niceupthedanceagain · 14/12/2021 09:52

Postman
Bin collectors
Milkman
Cleaner
Dog walkers

Merry Christmas 🎄

BlitheringBlathers · 14/12/2021 13:24

I would really like to tip my post lady as she so nice when I see her but I have no idea how to go about it! What do you do, wait till you hear them post letters and then rush out? Leave it hanging on the outside of the letter box? Blush🙈

Also how do you address it? "Dear postie"? 😅

To clarify, when I say "it" I'm referring to the Christmas card 😅 ..I just read my post back and it seemed I'd worded it weirdly!
Trisolaris · 14/12/2021 13:33

Cleaner, restaurant staff and that’s it.

SpinnersWindow · 14/12/2021 13:37

I always tip the binmen who do the black bins because they can make or break you over rubbish removal if they get the arse. Might as well keep them sweet.
