No. 1 item on your Christmas dinner plate

We were talking about Christmas dinner and the must haves and the bits you would sacrifice. It would seem I am an oddity. I was the only one to put bread sauce at number one. With sage and onion stuffing coming a close second, followed by cranberry sauce. I would sack off the pigs and blankets and parsnips any day. Anyone else?

Best thing:

Brussell Sprouts
Home made stuffing
Crunchy outsides, fluffy insides roasties

Leave out:

Bread sauce
Cranberry sauce

Fifthtimelucky · 14/12/2021 07:43

I'd go with the things that make it special to Christmas:

Cranberry sauce - only ever made at Christmas
Bread sauce - very rarely made at other times
Turkey - because there's no point in the other two without it.

Pigs in blankets
Roast potatoes
Sprouts

You can keep your bread sauce and cranberries!

Pigs in blankets
Stuffing
Sprouts

We're having Christmas Dinner at the in laws for the first time in about 16 years this year and I had to discreetly enquire as to the availability of pigs in blankets as it just isn't Christmas Dinner otherwise.

FireworkParrot · 14/12/2021 08:08
  1. Stuffing
  2. Roast potatoes
  3. Gravy

If I only had those three I'd be happy.

Mrsjayy · 14/12/2021 08:15

enquire as to the availability of pigs in blankets as it just isn't Christmas Dinner otherwise.

Last year my mum forgot this year I'm cooking them and taking them !

Breastfeedingworries · 14/12/2021 08:18

Red cabbage
Stuffing
Cream leeks

Parsnips
Sprouts
Carrots

PurpleDaisies · 14/12/2021 08:22

Roast potatoes and gravy. I could eat that as a meal on its own.

I’m also a fan of bread sauce. Either a stuffing or a nut roast. Sprouts and red cabbage essential.

I can take or leave pigs in blankets which have been ruined by me going veggie. Cauliflower cheese is wrong on a roast, as is mash.

AnotherMansCause · 14/12/2021 08:32

Roast potatoes
Chestnut stuffing or a good nut roast, or both
Roast parsnips & carrots
Gravy
Roast onion
Sprouts (steamed not roasted)
Cranberry sauce

Anything meaty can get in the sea.

languagelover96 · 14/12/2021 08:38

Mince pies
Pigs in blankets
Turkey
Cold cuts of meat and fish
Roast veg
Fruit and cheese platters
Candy canes
Chocolates and sweets
Wine

SittingontheSidelines · 14/12/2021 08:52

No 1 Bread sauce. It is not Christmas dinner without it.
Sprouts with chestnuts and bacon
Gravy
Cauliflower cheese (controversial I know)
Roast parsnips
Red Cabbage
Stuffing
Cranberry
Roast potatoes
Glazed carrots
Any other Veg that's going, I won't refuse any of it.
Pigs in blankets
Oh and a little Turkey on the side.
Roast Sweet potato optional but nice.

Christmas pudding with brandy butter and cream, ice cream, and custard is compulsory even if too full to actually eat it till the day after Boxing Day.

ThackeryBinks · 14/12/2021 09:00

Devils on horseback
Purée of celeriac and potato
Chestnut stuffing
Gravy

DingoDango · 14/12/2021 09:04

Actually the thing that would ruin the entire meal without it is the gravy.

But the things I'd also really miss if I didn't have them

Cauliflower cheese
Pigs in blankets
Stuffing
Parsnips

GiltEdges · 14/12/2021 10:43

Top of the list:

Parsnips
Sprouts
Roasts
Cauliflower cheese

Wouldn't miss:

Yorkshire puddings
Turkey
Stuffing
Pigs in blankets

MySafeSpace · 14/12/2021 10:49

Roast potatoes are a must for me!! Closely followed by cranberry sauce and parsnips - yum yum

LadyOfMisrule · 14/12/2021 13:42

Must have:
Chicken, Goose, Beef or Lamb (rarely turkey)
Red cabbage
Gravy
Roast potatoes
Leeks in cheese sauce
Stuffing
Yorkies

Wouldn't bother with:
Bread sauce (never made it, never will)
Sprouts

FindingMeno · 14/12/2021 14:06

Brussel sprouts

OhamIreally · 14/12/2021 19:54

@ThackeryBinks

Devils on horseback Purée of celeriac and potato Chestnut stuffing Gravy
Ooh what are devils on horseback?
TheShadoutCrepes · 14/12/2021 19:56

Yes, bread sauce no 1 for me too.

Ethelswith · 14/12/2021 19:59

Bacon scrolls
Gravy
Roasties

Roundeartheratchriatmas · 14/12/2021 20:07

Roast potatoes are number 1. No roasties no point.

After that pigs in blankets as its otherwise just a roast.

What could I skip ? Carrots maybe or other veg.

TheHolyPotato · 14/12/2021 20:08

It has to be sprouts, even with a nut roast.

Roundeartheratchriatmas · 14/12/2021 20:09

I’m also not arsed about bread sauce (yuck) or cranberry although I don’t mind cranberry.

I wouldn’t eat it without gravy.

DSGR · 14/12/2021 20:11

Stuffing
Pigs in blankets
Roast potatoes

ThesecondLEM · 14/12/2021 20:17

Never had bread sauce, is it made from bread?

Cauliflower cheese is my favourite, followed by pigs in blanket.
