No. 1 item on your Christmas dinner plate

We were talking about Christmas dinner and the must haves and the bits you would sacrifice. It would seem I am an oddity. I was the only one to put bread sauce at number one. With sage and onion stuffing coming a close second, followed by cranberry sauce. I would sack off the pigs and blankets and parsnips any day. Anyone else?

  1. Stuffings (yes plural!)
  2. Pigs
  3. Bread sauce
  4. Roasties

Don't care about the rest

Stuffing

DustyMaiden · 13/12/2021 19:09

Agree with you but happy to keep the parsnips.

My mum's homemade pizza and tortilla española.

The former isn't even Christmas food, but then we never do the typical Spanish Christmas meal anyway. I can pass on the tortilla as I can make that myself, but if I go home twice a year it's to eat that pizza!

maddiemookins16mum · 13/12/2021 19:17

My homemade American style stuffing (the stale loaf of sourdough bread is in the freezer). I still need to get some Mace.

Tricked2003 · 13/12/2021 19:18

Great home made gravy. If the gravy is bad everything else is ruined! 😃

TheGriffle · 13/12/2021 19:19

Give me a plate of roast potatoes, pigs in blankets and fried sprouts with bacon and I wouldn’t need anything else.

NalPolishRemover · 13/12/2021 19:20

My must haves are:
Trukey
Sage & onion stuffing (NO meat in it!)
Cranberry sauce
Roast potatoes
Marrowfat peas

I could happily eat my dinner with just that but I also like

Roast carrots & parsnips
Cauliflower cheese
Gravy
Baked ham

I would turn down:
Sausage meat stuffing
Pigs in blankets - never had them & no interest on them whatsoever. They don't 'go' with a roast dinner for me
Yorkshire pudding (same as above unless it's roast beef but we have turkey)
Bread sauce- yuk!
Bacon on the turkey. Don't like this
Brussels sprouts- I eat them if they're served but don't love them

mbosnz · 13/12/2021 19:24

My essentials are:

Roast chicken with Mum's stuffing and DH's gravy (I'm so cheating here, lol)
Peas
Kumara/sweet potato.

Beeinalily · 13/12/2021 19:25

I'm an oddity too OP, it's the sprouts for me. I'm the only one here who likes them, so they're a treat!

BradleyCooperwillbemine · 13/12/2021 19:36

OMG - someone else who loves bread sauce!! I thought it was only me and my family. My husband doesn't get it at all. I could just eat that and maybe dip a few pigs in blankets and some of my homemade cranberry and lemon stuffing balls. Yum - can't wait.

AutumnAlmanack · 13/12/2021 19:39

Bread sauce is my absolute favourite thing! Next RPs and then chipolatas.

BeepBoopBoob · 13/12/2021 19:40

1.) Roast potatoes
2.) Pigs in blankets
3.) Any desserts!

RonniePickering · 13/12/2021 19:47

I've never tried bread sauce, the idea of wet bread makes me heave 😷

I'd choose
Roast potatoes
Sprouts
Turkey

Honestly, made properly it is fab!
IncyWincyGrownUp · 13/12/2021 20:05

Turkey, with the crispy delicious bacon or Parma ham over the top is my favourite part of the plate. Probably because it’s a once a year thing.

Give me that, Yorkshire puddings, and gravy and I’m happy.

Sprouts defo number one, but I would love my DM's homemade stuffing. Unfortunately DM is no longer up to cooking so I will never taste it again.

Kingsmede · 13/12/2021 20:14

Homemade gravy. Made well before and frozen.

purplecorkheart · 13/12/2021 20:17

To be honest I am not a huge fan of Christmas dinner. Never really thought about but honestly if I was told that I was having cereal for my main course for Christmas dinner it would not hugely bother me. I love gravy, starters in general and the canapes.
