I read that Priti Patel is going to put her name forward Shock the horror. Also Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak are contenders.

Anyone with actual ability won't want to go near the job. They won't want to be associated with the mess.

Fairylights25 · 12/12/2021 09:19

I am still grateful we don't have Jeremy Corbyn!

thecatfromjapan · 12/12/2021 09:24

@Poetrypatty

If Gove came out of the closet, would the Tory Party vote for him?

I thought he already had, round the time of the divorce and the nightclubbing

I thought so too.

Hasn't he?

But I don't think the problem is his new relationship.

It's the craziness around it. There's a whole load of other stuff going on with Gove.

I think even a paint job turning him into the political equivalent of Philip Schofield will mitigate his more erratic behaviour.

Truss

Mainly because she will do as she is told, they have been working over the last few months to change her image. They need someone the complete opposite of Johnson and I think she is it.

MrsCremuel · 12/12/2021 09:55

Hunt? They wheel him out regularly as an NHS expert/fledgling Tory grandee, despite having had a hand in dismantling it. He might be the outsider candidate to challenge the current in crowd.

Flingingmelon · 12/12/2021 09:59

As much as I'd love an extended paternity leave (can you imagine Boris on paternity leave? Drinking too much and harassing the nanny) I don't think we are rid until early next year and if Omicron turns nasty our next PM is probably going to let Boris shovel that shit.

Liz hasn't got a chance, Gove likes being kingmaker. It'll be Sunak.

MousesBack · 12/12/2021 10:03

@Poetrypatty

Sunak possibly the least worst.
Sunak is also the most palatable and therefore likely to get voted back in at the next general election. I want to see them crash and burn, so I'm hoping for Truss or Gove.
borntobequiet · 12/12/2021 10:35

@girlmom21

Surely Raab would be a strong contender?

If Gove or Priti were elected leader Starmer could have a 3 year hiatus safe in the knowledge he's winning the next GE.

Dominic “I didn’t know we were an island” Raab?

Give over.

girlmom21 · 12/12/2021 10:49

@borntobequiet Dominic "stepped in as deputy PM when Boris had covid" Raab?

God I'd vote for him over Priti Patel every single day of the rest of my life.

He did and was ripped to shreds every time he opened his mouth at PMQs.

MrsColon · 12/12/2021 10:58

What's wrong with Liz Truss? I don't really know much about her, apart from her excellent "Women do have vaginas, Nick" moment

Dreamstate · 12/12/2021 11:00

Anyone who isn't a hardliners lockdowner. Gove would have had us all back in lockdown by now so no thank you!

BoudecaBains · 12/12/2021 11:17

He wont.

ChinookPilotsGoVertical · 12/12/2021 11:25

George Eustice?

Fairylights25 · 12/12/2021 11:25

Oh and I don't think he will resign after the 'breaking' photographs of Boris doing.....wait for it.....drum roll please....a zoom quiz!

That is actually breaking news folks I am serious, with photos capturing him red handed on his lap top smiling at colleagues of all things.

Outrageous.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/12/2021 11:26

Can you Imagine the smirk on Priti Patel's face if she got the top job and went off to meet HMQ? Her facial muscles might never recover. She has to be the worst possibility, surely.

CormoranStrike · 12/12/2021 11:28

Rishi Sunak - a lot more credible than Liz Truss

Hippywannabe · 12/12/2021 11:30

I doubt he will but if he did, Rishi or Gove would be the frontrunners

BoundariesAlready · 12/12/2021 11:33

On what planet would Bojo the clown resign? I really can't see it - or anybody else queuing up to take the position during a badly handled pandemic, brexit and NHS crisis.

Libertaire · 12/12/2021 11:36

Firstly, Johnson isn’t going to resign. He isn’t capable of ‘doing the decent thing’, or putting his party or the country’s interests ahead of his own. That would require character & integrity, neither of which he possesses. This is a man who has been sacked twice for lying.

There are two ways in which Johnson will leave Number 10. Either he loses the next general election (the latest date for which is three years from today) or he will be removed by Tory MPs by losing a vote of confidence.

Is that likely? It’s certainly possible. The Tory party has shown brutal ruthlessness in the past by knifing leaders who had become political liabilities. There are many MPs who represent safe seats in the south of England which would always vote Tory whoever was leader, but there are also a large number of MPs representing ‘red wall’ seats who owe their seats & careers to Johnson’s charisma. Would they really vote against him?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/12/2021 11:37

He ceases to be PM if he loses a leadership challenge and is replaced as leader of the Tory party. He can't cling on to power if he no longer has party support.

Fairylights25 · 12/12/2021 11:43

And we think Keir Starmer would be doing a better job, really?

Because it would be an even worse car crash than what we have now, we would remained locked down with the unions and the Labour left stasi indefinitely, and the UK would look more like North Korea than the shires. Anyone remotely interested in their freedoms should be happy we have at least a liberal minded person running the country that was not afraid to go against the grain and reopen in the summer whilst we had the chance!

Boris is very far from perfect, but with him at least we stand a good chance of keeping some of our human rights. Angela Rayner would have had us all locked up without any respite, and god only knows what would have happened to the vaccine procurement. The Unions would never have opened the schools in a month of Mondays under any circumstances, our economy would be totally flat lining with the biggest debts of all time dwarfing what was spent by this government, and our country in absolute tatters make no mistake. So yes there have been mistakes, but fuck me things could be a lot worse.

I am pissed off with a lot of things, but I am most glad we do not have Labour and the Unionists in charge during this pandemic.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/12/2021 11:44

Red Wall seats are not solid or natural Tory seats. If the party thinks another MP has a better chance of retaining them, it's game over for Johnson.

dayouttobangor · 12/12/2021 11:49

@Fairylights25 if Jeremy Corbyn had become Prime Minister, and 100% if it had been Jeremy Hunt or Michael Gove, there would have been none of the delays in acting in March and October 2020. At least 20,000 more people would be alive today as a result. Same with Keir Starmer though that was not the choice.

dayouttobangor · 12/12/2021 11:50

I think it will be Rishi Sunak.
