I read that Priti Patel is going to put her name forward Shock the horror. Also Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak are contenders.

Gove. ive been to a few government backed talks recently and they all spent a good while talking about how good he is.. I came away thinking it was a bit odd. then all this kicked off and it makes more sense now.

borntobequiet · 12/12/2021 08:38

The only sensible choice would be Jeremy Hunt. I never thought I’d ever say that, but he’s the only one with the experience and at least some sense of gravitas who isn’t weird, creepy or slightly mad.
I listened to Liz Truss on Political Thinking yesterday and ended up with the distinct feeling that I’d been listening to a call menu for thirty minutes.

topcat2014 · 12/12/2021 08:38

I never understand how the answer always seems to include Gove..

And I vote tory.

Whoever it is would need party and those that tend to right to agree

Hunt and Gove might not get that if they want more restrictions

He's like the tolerated friend in a group. Always there, but nobody can understand why.
fournonblondes · 12/12/2021 08:41

@TheDrsDocMartens

Gove is putting himself about again now but think they’ve been setting up Sunak. I actually can’t think of anyone who would be good 🙄
So who d o you think would be good enough?
BusBusBus · 12/12/2021 08:41

Gove. I dont think its close enough to an election to have a change. Might as well wait to spring and blame any winter chaos on the old leader.

Cyrilgoggin · 12/12/2021 08:42

Sajid Javid.

Chr1stmasCarole · 12/12/2021 08:42

@normanthegonk

How I wish they would have elected rory stewart as leader
Me too, I keep wondering if the last couple of years would have been different if they'd chosen him. He seems sensible and fairly caring for a Tory.
Spaceman1 · 12/12/2021 08:42

Boris hasn't changed, he was just the same before he was elected and at that time the majority voted for him knowing what he would be like.

Meandmini3 · 12/12/2021 08:43

Surely not Gove. He’s awful. Sunak? But having another very rich toff in charge isn’t exactly great. Need to vote these clowns out.

Cyrilgoggin · 12/12/2021 08:44

I should have said I'd like it to be Javid. I don't think it will be him. Possibly Jeremy Hunt. I'm not a fan, but I think he'd be a good opponent for Starmer.

ballsdeep · 12/12/2021 08:44

Sunak . I can just even bear to think of the rest of them.

Motheroftigers · 12/12/2021 08:44

Rishi Sunak. I really do think it is the tory party that are doing the leaking, it was no coincidence that he was the one handing out the cash during the crisis

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 12/12/2021 08:44

He will resign if the 1922 go round and tell him to! I'm sure they'll allow him to cite health / family reasons, however.

It's not much of a choice for his replacement, however.

Poetrypatty · 12/12/2021 08:48

I think without the pandemic he'd have got away with it, but it has highlighted how unsuited he is to the job.

Not Hunt, either.

The Conservative Party membership is small and considerably to the Right - not just of the electorate but the Conservative MPs as a whole.

A leadership contest would probably end up going to the members - and they don't vote for Hunt.

FutureHope · 12/12/2021 08:55

Optimal scenario for me is someone who does (relatively speaking) minimal damage until the next election. Possibly Sajid Javid or Rishi. Gove, Lizard Truss and Pritchard Patel are all horrors.

In the meantime, Labour get it together, Kier steps up and becomes a real and visible leader, and we can vote for them 😀

PhilCornwall1 · 12/12/2021 08:56

He will resign if the 1922 go round and tell him to! I'm sure they'll allow him to cite health / family reasons, however.

He could use the excuse "I want to spend more time with my children" and it would be credible.

There aren't enough days in a working week to enable him to do that.

FutureHope · 12/12/2021 08:57

Also, if Boris has 7 kids, how does he find them time to do the job, see (some of) them/take their calls and attend parties?

His offspring are going to keep the psychotherapy industry in business in years to come.

BlowDryRat · 12/12/2021 08:57

Sunak or Hunt.

I reckon Johnson will hang on until Friday when we know the results of the by-election. He'll be out if they lose.

Ifailed · 12/12/2021 08:58

If Gove came out of the closet, would the Tory Party vote for him?

ManchesterTartwithCustard · 12/12/2021 09:00

Please not Javid. Earlier this week said it would be unethical to introduce mandatory vaccination. In the same conversation went onto say he supports mandatory vaccination for NHS staff.
Shows how much regard he has for NHS workers

girlmom21 · 12/12/2021 09:02

Surely Raab would be a strong contender?

If Gove or Priti were elected leader Starmer could have a 3 year hiatus safe in the knowledge he's winning the next GE.

Poetrypatty · 12/12/2021 09:04

If Gove came out of the closet, would the Tory Party vote for him?

I thought he already had, round the time of the divorce and the nightclubbing
