Wishing I hadn't read Sky News tonight - feeling scared and anxious.

About half an hour ago I clicked onto Sky News to check what's going on in the world - only to see a very depressing and frightening headline about how Omicron will cause 75,000 deaths and that Plan C will soon be in place. Just what I needed to see before bedtimeSad

Now I feel very worried and frightened - perhaps that's what Sky News want people to feel, but I've really had enough now of the constant doom and gloom Sad

So many conflicting stories: today the telegraph had a report that omicron could (if it as mild as they think it might be) end up giving Covid immunity to the unvaxed.

vodkaredbullgirl · 11/12/2021 23:31

Don't watch the news, you already know what's going on in the world.

BrightonOrLancaster · 11/12/2021 23:32

Just chill. Here's a blurry pic of my cat this evening. Think like an animal. Animals aren't informed. They live in the moment and adapt as things happen. Dont forget that what you cant control is pointless worrying about.

Kummerspeck · 11/12/2021 23:33

I heard this on the radio earlier but it was a prediction and was dependant on lots of variables like how the spread continues, how effective the vaccines are and other measures we take.
I think we are all worn down by this now and, personally, I think we need to question the motives of the media more in how they report information like this. Every story seems designed to frighten or anger us in some way rather than giving us impartial information

Which they’ve already got….
Thegreencup · 11/12/2021 23:35

If it makes you feel better, the BBC is reporting similar.

What's bothering you most? The death toll? Another lockdown?

Yeah….
Dreamstate · 11/12/2021 23:43

Its all a load of could happen.

This is why I stay off the news cos if I don't see id never know and life is so much happier and better. Try to forget about it and tell yourself they didn't even get their delta variant prediction right.

They are just ramping up the fear we gone from we aren't sure how severe it is most data says its mild to suddenly people are going to be dropping like flies and we still haven't had a single death from this variant.

This is why the media is so disgusting, ramping up the fear and contributing to ruining ppls mental health. Not like they give two fucks tho as long as they make money

ichundich · 11/12/2021 23:53

It was reported by other news outlets too. I think we're being primed for another lockdown. I could cry.

derenstar · 11/12/2021 23:54

Sky News might as well be renamed Covid Hysteria News. Not great for anyone’s mental health. Switch it off, take sensible precautions and live your life as best and fully as you can. That’s what I’m doing.

FrownedUpon · 11/12/2021 23:55

I think we’re heading for another lockdown too. Those numbers are frightening.

I'm sadly inclined to agree and could also cry. Mainstream media and the government are determined to destroy people's mental health, businesses and lives.

I don't believe those figures are in any way likely. They are just scaring people into having the booster as the uptake hasn't been as high as they'd like. That's why the story now is that 2 doses don't protect you against omicron but amazingly a third will. It's all scare tactics to bring control to the masses. Just ignore it.

I hope you're right!
fournonblondes · 12/12/2021 00:09

Honestly/things change much daily. Do not worry. I really wonder if SA seems to be ok why all the doom here.

Good advice. I'm scared of plan c but not covid. I had covid before there was any vaccines, overweight, high BP. I was fine. No point in writing about what you cant control. My mum in her 70s was practically on a bus every day in peak Kent covid and she is still here too.

I tend to think "well that sounds a bit shit" then turn the news off now. I certainly dont seek it out anymore unless I'm interested in the science of it all but only I as studied biology at uni so it's a interest anyway

whynotwhatknot · 12/12/2021 00:15

Why if its meant to be milder will there be so many deaths-i dont get this prediction at all

ive had enough anyway i done all the lockdowns got all my vaccines im not going to stop visiting family this xmas whatever they say

caringcarer · 12/12/2021 00:17

I really hope we do t have another lockdown. I did not cope well with last one. I keep trying to find things to be positive about. Yesterday Morrison's opened up a few more Xmas delivery slots now I have a delivery booked for 23rd. My dd and sil came today with dgc and we did an early Xmas with gift swapping and Xmas dinner as she is at in-laws this Xmas and I was worried if we left it we might be locked down again. She lives 200 miles away so I don't see her more than 4 times a year during these Covid times.

Delphinna · 12/12/2021 00:18

Meh. I have bigger problems. With any luck I might die of Omicron and that would resolve everything.

LethargeMarg · 12/12/2021 00:28

BBC news is not reporting the same as sky if you read beyond the doom monger headline - it gives a good and bad scenario and they actually quote experts saying the worst case scenario is unlikely : ive been put tonight chatting to a couple of medical students who all made the points about the need for a virus to survive is based on it being milder -I felt very reassured after hearing from them.
Also remember we are all scarred from last Xmas last minute cancellation Bur we were in a very different place and what we often forget is we were basically already in a lockdown and from end of September household mixing had pretty much been banned and pubs had been closed in most places since end of October so there wasn't much else to close - Xmas 2020 was only ever a couple of households mixing and All that really changed was they made it only Xmas day you could do that or is nothing like what we have now - we have a lot of steps to go before we would be anywhere near lockdown

EllaPaella · 12/12/2021 08:42

We've been here before, this time last year it was the same with the delta variant and most people were then unvaccinated. We are in a different situation now so no-one cam really predict what is going to happen.
Vaccines haven't prevented people getting symptoms with delta although they have prevented people getting serious disease, this will hopefully be the case with omicron too.
The media's job is to be sensationalist and to attract attention so of course they will use the most dramatic headlines.
My main concern (I am a nurse) is everyone getting even a mild illness at the same time and having to stay home for 1-2 weeks, it's going to cause chaos in the health service and on top of that we will have the whole track and trace problem again with everyone off isolating.
I am trying to just take one day at a time, trying to feel concern rather than worry if that makes sense.

user1471462428 · 12/12/2021 11:56

@EllaPaella I’m also a nurse and am so exhausted I’m almost wishing to catch covid to have some time off. We’re so bloody short staffed and I got flu a month ago which I don’t feel recovered from as I’m just so tired. I’m not eating or sleeping properly and my manager is burying her head in the sand about how hard it is. I feel very lucky to have avoided Covid so far but now I say bring it on if I die at least I get some fucking rest.

FrancescaContini · 12/12/2021 11:57

Don’t watch any news before bed.

Hospedia · 12/12/2021 12:33

I think the forecasts are based on the severity being mid-range because it hasn't been going around in high enough numbers yet for then to know with certainty that it is milder.

There is also the fact that more cases will equal more deaths, even if only 1% of people were to die if you have 10,000,000 cases then that's 100,000 people.
