Something strange is happening in my bedroom and I can’t work out why!

I’m sorry, it’s not very exciting but I just don’t understand it.

I have a bedside cabinet, and about 6 weeks ago I noticed that there was some gritty rubbley type stuff on it. I wiped it away but later on there was more there. I thought I mustn’t have cleared it up properly so did it again, more thoroughly.

And basically, ever since, there’s nearly always this gritty stuff there! I can’t imagine where it’s coming from - there’s nothing above the cabinet except the ceiling and a hanging light but they don’t seem to be the source. I never hear it dropping onto the cabinet, or see it dropping, it’s just there!

Where is it coming from?!

@BluTangClan

The white, round plastic thing that the light cable goes through at the ceiling is the ceiling rose. Unscrew it with your hands and see if there's any grit in there.
Oh sorry - I thought a ceiling rose was one of those fancy bits of plaster. I’ll have a go at unscrewing it tomorrow.

I used to get gritty, sandy deposits like this on my wooden floor. Now I have tiles it's disappeared.

Blood?! Is that normal for spiders?

@SwanShaped

I ALSO have a spider guarding eggs who does tiny poos on the kitchen windowsill. I can see the egg case. Never seen the spider tho.
Ours sits next to it.

Or you could put a piece of paper on the bedside chest tonight and see if the grit appears on it or under it.

Clever!!

@Wendyer

I just stood on the bed to inspect the coving and the light fixture but I can’t see anything. There’s more on the bedside table now - here’s another lovely picture (hopefully of the right thing!)
Oh that is definitely not spider poo.

Is that unusual for spiders?
Couchbettato · 11/12/2021 22:58

This is a most peculiar and interesting mystery and I'm really eager to find out if it's woodworm or spider poo.

Perhaps the bedside table is getting darked on.

Strangely invested here. Love that lamp too!

BrightonOrLancaster · 11/12/2021 23:02

I can't wait to see this mystery cracked.

SirVixofVixHall · 11/12/2021 23:02

It is very weird as it looks like sand ? It is gritty between your fingers or can you crush it like wood dust ?

BrightonOrLancaster · 11/12/2021 23:03

Looks like sand. Maybe your house is haunted by an ocean spirit. Or the ghost of a drowned sailor. Do you live near the coast?

Echinops · 11/12/2021 23:09

What's the base of the white lamp made of? I had a bathroom grit mystery and it was the weighted base of the loo roll holder degrading, it was like a lump of rubbishy concrete held in with tape

Pippapet · 11/12/2021 23:09

Woodworm living in the cabinet itself is the likeliest guess. Move the cabinet to a different room, see if it still appears.

MsAgnesDiPesto · 11/12/2021 23:12

Check that the inside bit of your bedside lamp, close to the bulb, isn’t breaking down and creating debris. Over years the heat of bulbs makes plastic brittle and can make it deteriorate.

Wendyer · 11/12/2021 23:14

Is this a clearer picture? It’s literally just like grit.

PrittySticky · 11/12/2021 23:19

Can we guess how many pickled eggs are in the jar please?

cherrypiepie · 11/12/2021 23:20

@Echinops I had lamp base like that too!

And it left rubbly lumps.

I think it’s pickled onions not eggs!
