Something strange is happening in my bedroom and I can’t work out why!

I’m sorry, it’s not very exciting but I just don’t understand it.

I have a bedside cabinet, and about 6 weeks ago I noticed that there was some gritty rubbley type stuff on it. I wiped it away but later on there was more there. I thought I mustn’t have cleared it up properly so did it again, more thoroughly.

And basically, ever since, there’s nearly always this gritty stuff there! I can’t imagine where it’s coming from - there’s nothing above the cabinet except the ceiling and a hanging light but they don’t seem to be the source. I never hear it dropping onto the cabinet, or see it dropping, it’s just there!

Where is it coming from?!

The lamp is trying to tell you something

ElvisPresleyHadABaby · 12/12/2021 23:40

Unscrew your light.

At least read the OP's posts people!

And we have checked tonight and she does have an actual web- currently has caught 3 small flies. So she has a food supply too and she is near the sink if she fancies a drink Smile

@FiddlefigOnTheRoof

I had this. The heat of the bulb was disintegrating the plastic collar of the lamp that sits around the bulb, and it crumbled around the desk on a daily basis.
I suggested this a couple of times but OP doesn’t seem to have looked into it yet.

THANK YOU! Gin

@Echinops

What's the base of the white lamp made of? I had a bathroom grit mystery and it was the weighted base of the loo roll holder degrading, it was like a lump of rubbishy concrete held in with tape
This happened to me with a sticky tape dispenser! Could not work out where the grit was coming from in the drawer and it turned out to be the bottom of the tape dispenser degrading, hidden by a flimsy layer of felt. Weird.
Cheetosyummy · 13/12/2021 10:46

Any update

youvegottenminuteslynn · 13/12/2021 11:23

@SoupDragon

Put the base of the lamp in something like a freezer bag.
GENIUS
Wendyer · 13/12/2021 14:04

It’s definitely the lamp base I’m sad to say :(. I took it downstairs last night and no new grit on the cabinet this morning. I banged it on the kitchen worktop and lots of stuff came out. I’ve sellotaped it up now so no more leakage.

at least you have found the cause

MyOtherProfile · 13/12/2021 14:18

That's so disappointing! I was sure it was something far more exciting than that 😜

EntropyBanana · 13/12/2021 14:23

Team base grit FTW!

Choux · 13/12/2021 15:02

But HOW does the grit get all over the cabinet when no one is moving the lamp and presumably the surface is flat???

Mirw · 13/12/2021 15:20

Rats in the attic...

blueshoes · 13/12/2021 16:16

It is a bit of an anti-climax but at least the mystery is solved. Who would have thought.

ImprobablePuffin · 13/12/2021 17:31

I'm with you. I totally believe that OP is telling the truth but I just don't understand the science of how the grit sprays all over the table and not just collecting in a little pile by the lamp base. If someone more knowledgable than I could explain the physics I'd be grateful.
MyOtherProfile · 13/12/2021 19:22

Good question. How does it get everywhere? I think there's more to the story...

Handholdtoday · 14/12/2021 10:32

I think we are all collectively not ready for this to be the end 😀

LavenderAskew · 14/12/2021 10:58

Yes it's a weird one how it spread about.

Maybe it's alien sentient grit? It makes it way up the lamp stand into the bulb and throws itself out. This is why it's scattered about the table.

The reason is the alien race it's from wish to communicate with the human race and learn from us. Stuff like what crosses and crabs are (hence the patterns a few wiser posters spotted).

YourenutsmiLord · 14/12/2021 15:25

OP has an open-mouthed snoring technique she has failed to mention so far, so ---- side table shoogles on the loud, noisy inhale, spilling the grit, which is spread about by the long and gusty exhale.

FrazzledMCPremenopausalWoman · 14/12/2021 18:55

@LuluBlakey1

Spider poo? We have a small spider living on the ceiling above our kitchen window. She has laid a small sack of eggs and is guarding them. She poops every night and it falls down onto the same spot on the window sill, one dot of gritty poo the size of a small pin head that I clean up with kitchen roll and antibacterial spray every morning. I am fascinated by her. Not sure how long the eggs take to hatch but it has been a couple of months so I think they might not now.
This is amazing! If they do hatch, please keep us updated Smile

@Wendyer
This is best MN thread I've read in a very long time! The OP and ALL the PP have entertained with the such comedic output!
OP, are you quite sure you've found the source of the grit? Please go check around your whole house and report back as to whether anymore of your lamp bases could be a source so that this thread can continue...maybe you could scope out some kind of infestation in your Christmas tree ( the actual tree, not your lovely DD)Xmas Grin
