Delays in getting medical renewal driving licence - anything I can do?

I've got medical conditions which mean I need to renew my driving licence every 3 years. Have to use paper forms and sent them off months ago.

I'm meant to be renting a car abroad over Christmas, my current licence expires this week and there's no sign of my new licence.

I've contacted DVLA electronically but got the 'things are delayed, be patient' message. Is there anything else I can do?

Don't normally let my medical conditions bother me but this seems so unfair, if I didn't have medical issues I would have a 10y licence and wouldn't have this problem!

I have no advice, but the DVLA have become shockingly inefficient since they introduced WFH. DH has a medical licence and his was delayed by several months, but it was in this country, and he had proof of his application for a replacement in case he was stopped. I'm not sure how this would work abroad though. I suspect that they will be inflexible.

I hope you get it back in time.
