Help me tidy up our billy bookcases before Christmas!

We have several old ikea billy bookcases used to store toys and crap, not just books and they always look a mess! I have bought some doors to fit them and now need to find storage boxes that don't jut out so I can close the doors. There must be millions of us with billy bookcases - what storage solutions do you all use that actually work with them??

Nope, sorry... ours are the complete dumping ground of our house Hmm

Everything that doesn't seem to have a home winds up there. I do a big clear every now and then..but then wonder, where does this actually go?

We have 4 of the boxes that I think are meant for expedit in the bottom hosting random shit, and craft stuff, and one has hats and gloves etc. But they don't properly fit, they do jut out a bit

Good luck. Hope someone more useful than me come along ( and I can pinch ideas too!)

I think you can get cardboard boxes that fit on Kallaxs, but there are also smaller ones- shoe box size, I think called Tjena...
They're IKEA so may work with Billy's.

Otherwise Amazon for smaller cube storage?

Thanks DinosApple tjena might actually fit, although not sturdy enough to last. I'm ideally looking for some big tub storage that fits a 26cm deep shelf. At the moment we've got some samla plastic boxes, which are big enough to fit lots of toys in, but are 28cm so too wide for the door to close - Ikea designers where was your joined-up thinking!!

The Tjena cardboard boxes are good, as DinosApple said, or there are Kuggis boxes or Sockerbit boxes in different sizes (both ranges are plastic). The difficulty is that Billy bookcases are shallow, so the storage options are quite small, compared with Kallax units.

Thegreencup · 11/12/2021 11:13

Ditch the Billy and buy some Kallax. We have Kallax Shelves in the living room and the kids room. For the living room we got the nice rattan style boxes. For the kids room we got the £3 boxes. They are still a bit of a dumping ground but the stuff gets dumped into a basket or box and out of my eye sight so I am happy. Grin

Have you had a look in places like B&M, Home Bargains and The Range? We have a book case in the kids room that is smaller than Billy (but is from Ikea). We have a couple of Kallax style boxes on it that I got from somewhere like The Range.

Thanks for ideas. I like Kuggis boxes - i wish they would make them taller, as they would be perfect then. Tjena might be the way to go for now. Can I face a weekend trip to Ikea in December though? No, no, I can't.

You know you need to declutter as well don't you. Not that I can talk, we bought a bigger house and took all our crap with us and shoved it all in the garage of doom. 2022 needs to be the year of the declutter.

JaninaDuszejko · 11/12/2021 11:25

IKEA deliver, have a look on the website and see how much it will cost and if that cost is cheaper than going to IKEA. Think about the cost of the petrol, wear and tear to the car, the environmental damage, the damage to your mental health... I'm sure the delivery charge works out cheaper Wink.

trickyex · 11/12/2021 12:23

Look at IKEA as they sell the right sizes for Billy and will deliver.
Or just get rid of some of your crap? Cheaper option, very satisfying to clear out stuff

ItsDinah · 11/12/2021 12:31

Cardboard boxes out the supermarket. Cut to size. Use parcel tape to reassemble. Cover with pictures, wrapping paper, decoupage ,fabric, paint, fablon. I've really enjoyed recycling this way.

Inthewainscoting · 11/12/2021 12:38

I verrry gradually threw stuff out until the remainder fitted. But I'm retired - it had been building up over decades!
