Any dentists around? Splinter in my gum?

I think I have some sort of splinter or food particle lodged just beneath the skin on my gum line where my gum meets my tooth. I've tried pressing the gum and trying to pick it out with a sterilised needle but it's not worked. Will it just work it's own way out or do I need to see a dentist?
Any one had similar and managed to remove it?

I've had this twice now and it does work itself out. Mine just popped out one evening and was easy to pull out.

Ooh hope so - that's what I wanted to hear!
