subscription services - how to cancel?

Hi all, I know this is probably entirely my fault.

I paid for a 3 month glossybox subscription, I was under the impression this was only for 3 months. I paid as it was on a deal for £20. I paid using a card I don't often have money on. All was fine, but then the other week they attempted to take £40 for another 3 month subscription. I got an email saying they couldn't send out my box because I hadn't paid. I emailed saying that I did not know I was agreeing to another subscription, no email was sent communicating this up front, and I wanted to cancel. I was told that they will not allow me to, despite not sending out anything.

Is there anything I can do? I hated the glossybox I received before and the products were things I had / didn't suit my skin. I don't want it again.

The payment just keeps getting rejected now as I am not topping up the card. I was told they'd attempt to take the money 'through any means necessary' but it seems difficult considering I've received no products and have asked to cancel in numerous emails.

I don’t know about this one in particular, but usually with these sorts of things they auto renew unless you phone them and tell them not to.

They rely on people forgetting and just letting it go as it’s too much hassle to change.

Hi there. Having had a quick look it does say that the 'pay up front' option of 3 monthly has 'payment taken every three months' and it is pretty clear at the top so I'm not sure there's much you can do

The FAQ section says if you want to cancel the subscription you must do so by the 14th day of the last month. Have you cancelled it now going forwards?

Reading it this way, it does appear that they would be in the right to keep trying to take payment for the next 3 months as you didn't cancel. Personally I think this is OTT and they probably catch a lot of people this way!

Might be worth tweeting them and seeing if someone with some muscle in customer service will step in for you but technically they are within their rights to take this payment as it does say on sign up that it is 3 monthly and it wasn't cancelled in the time frame

Sorry, I know that's rough!!

I saw that deal. It was really clear that you were getting a discount on the first 3 months and then would carry on with the full subscription unless you cancelled by a set date.

Really, it was very clear. It wasnt hidden.

You didnt cancel so you're going to have to pay it. Or cancel the direct debit on your online banking and see if they come after you for it.

I am aware it was probably clear, I know that they would be careful and rely on idiots like me.

But I think it's awful that they are refusing to cancel. I have tried to cancel since but they won't allow me. I have cancelled the DD and they just keep emailing. Again, they won't send the product so I am slightly unsure of what their recourse would be?

But they are only refusing to cancel the next three months because you didn't cancel it in the timeframe?

Presumably once you pay this three month subscription then that'll be the end of it.

So they're not refusing to cancel it forever, they're just saying you didn't cancel the next subscription in time and so you now owe £38

Their recourse would be to pursue it through the usual channels. No idea if they will though

Sorry, I don't think it's out of order of them really.... but it is annoying

They will hound you for a while....threaten legal action....then sell the debt to a debt collection agency...who will then hound you....probably won’t be worth them actually taking any action though.....but could be a lot of hassle for next 12 months with emails/letters etc
Hoppinggreen · 10/12/2021 11:15

They can take legal action as you did agree to this.
It may end up costing you a lot more

jendifer · 10/12/2021 11:22

Cancel it moving forward if you haven’t already.
I think I’d end up paying because I’d think it was my mistake for not cancelling in time. Some places will cancel it as a good will gesture but not all so I’d assume it was on me
