Been watching the ashes this week. Need a hand hold 😂😂

Yes but I can't watch or listen live, I'd be useless the next day. We call it Ashes lag. I've got highlights on to record but it's not looking good...

ilovetomatoes · 10/12/2021 00:19

Watching it now. Will stay up until 2z told my boss I’m going to be tired for the next month. And probably depressed too!

Finally Burns made a catch!

I have become nocturnal. I listen to TMS through the night, then again to the highlights podcast the following day because I have an unfortunate tendency to doze off...

I bloody love cricket.

Don't you just love Google's optimism

What a pleasant surprise to wake up to that score this morning!

northender · 10/12/2021 07:34

Jerbie it makes a change doesn't it?!

TomPinch · 10/12/2021 07:51

Checking in!

A better day today, but also a reminder that England don't have any top class batters other than Joe Root.

Burns got a brute of a delivery on the first day but why was he playing across the line to the first ball of a test match? And it sounds like he played a bad shot today too.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 10/12/2021 07:55

I put it on, try to stay awake but if I wake up in the night it’s on

ilovetomatoes · 10/12/2021 10:45

Pleasant surprise waking up this morning. Great fight back. Excited for tonight!

All these late nights, feels like having a newborn again 😂

I'm watching the "highlights" now

upinaballoon · 10/12/2021 20:18

@Jerble

What a pleasant surprise to wake up to that score this morning!
Yes, it was. We can't come any worse than second, can we? Always look on the bright side..............
llangollen21 · 10/12/2021 20:22

I don't have BT sport or Sky. Went to two days of test matches in the summer, one of which was where Joe Root batted all day at Lords.

Sadly I cannot see England regaining the Ashes this winter.

H1978 · 10/12/2021 21:02

Used to stay up watching a few years ago until 3am. Can’t manage to stay up past 11pm these days 😳. If I get up a bit earlier I can catch the last hour. Not that we miss much, England are always rubbish in Australia.

TomPinch · 10/12/2021 21:35

Anything better than 4-1 or 3-0 would be an overachievement for this England team IMO. The batting is, on paper, just too weak. Only Root would make the 2010-11 team.

Root is good. Hameed and Pope are young and I hope will improve. Not convinced by Burns or Malan (loose strokeplay).

Every England team, even the awful ones in the 90s, had at least two reliable run-makers. The bowling is good but bowlers need a score to defend.

I actually reckon this is one of the weakest Ashes touring teams I've ever seen. I'm wondering what's been happening in English domestic cricket over the last decade - there does seem to be a lack of talent in the test side, and this really isn't a vintage Australia.

Sorry for the pessimism Sad

ilovetomatoes · 10/12/2021 22:26

@llangollen21 I didn’t have BY sport either but bought a monthly pass just for this. Hahaha.

@TomPinch agree the batting line up is weak. Burns is a joke quite frankly. But at least they have come back strongly rather than completely collapsing.

TomPinch · 10/12/2021 23:02

Yeah - a good effort by Root and Malan. But I'm told the Gabba pitch tends to have settled by day 3. So they were batting on a flatter track against the old ball.

There is a new ball tomorrow and the pitch will start to deteriorate. So it's going to get trickier.

(And to be fair Australia did bowl very well on day 1.)

ilovetomatoes · 10/12/2021 23:47

Come on Stokes!

I love cricket, my son plays and I never miss a match. I record the Ashes then watch it bit by bit in between school runs and other chores. I am running a day behind so am careful not to get updates on my phone. I have always wanted to go to the Boxing day Ashes match.

LaPufalina · 11/12/2021 00:09

I couldn't sleep last night and ended up watching the 30 mins with the Aussie 150 and England pair Sad now just turned on for the Root wicket. I'm bad luck!

ilovetomatoes · 11/12/2021 00:11

@caringcarer I love it too. It’s been such a rollercoaster of emotions this week. There really is nothing like it.

@LaPufalina can’t believe the last 30 mins. It’s mind boggling
