About 5/6 months ago I posted about repeated wisdom tooth infection and asking for positive stories. It encourged me to take the first steps towards extraction and today I finally did it!! Not a big deal to lots of people but I’m terrified of the dentist. So thanks!

Well done! Thought for an awful moment you'd hacked it out yourself!!

SwanShaped · 08/12/2021 18:37

Haha, no. Although I was tempted when it was so badly infected recently. Most pain ever.

Well done. What specifically helped you?

Hope you're not too sore now

Very well done. Dental phobia is an awful thing Flowers

SwanShaped · 08/12/2021 18:47

What helped was lots of positive stories about having a wisdom tooth out and how it was fine. No one told me a horror story! And then I was encouraged to at least phone my dentist and ask for a referral to the dental hospital. I had people’s words of encouragement in my head today.

Congratulations it took me years to have the remainder of my wisdom tooth out I was put to sleep in the end Grin

SwanShaped · 08/12/2021 18:52

Thanks. I was so scared today they said they might not be able to do it and I’d have to go for general. But luckily I just kept doing the next thing they asked and before I knew it, it was done.

Did they use sedation or just numb?

You've done incredibly well if you were awake, and are giving me hope too, thank you

SwanShaped · 08/12/2021 19:05

It was sedation. Which I was also terrified of. In case it made me feel incapacitated but unable to move or communicate. But it was actually fine! And the pain now is significantly less than when it was infected. I even ate dinner.

Even the dentists said I was more anxious than most people so I’m so pleased with myself for going though with it. I thought I might just try to run away. Felt like legging it down the corridor.

very well done you! I am dentaphobic (my word) and had to really try hard to find one I felt comfortable with, before starting to repair the horror show that was my mouth. It was all done, in 2 or 3 sessions of sedation, and I am now (almost) totally fine with going to see those same people. The relationship helped. I also chatted with them first, before making any plans. That too helped.

Congrats! Your mouth and general health will thank you!

SwanShaped · 08/12/2021 19:07

@LefttoherownDevizes are you due to have yours out?

OP posts:
SwanShaped · 08/12/2021 19:09

That’s what I’m like 2018 I was in there today and I could hardly breathe. Felt like I might pass out. But really the anticipation was so so so much worse than the actual extraction

We’ll done . I had two of mine out under GA in my twenties they were awkwardly placed . A year ago I bravely went and had another out while wide awake with just a local numbing shot . I was terrified beforehand and had thought of sedation I’ve had for other things but I actually found it less scary than some fillings !

Medievalist · 08/12/2021 19:16

Thank you so much for posting this op. I've finally agreed to be put on the waiting list to have my partially erupted wisdom tooth out. For the last couple of years I've had pain in my jaw from it and for the last 12 months or so it's been bleeding quite a lot and I'm constantly slooshing with salt water. Having finally agreed, although it absolutely terrifies me, I'd now like to just get it over with but my dentist says there's at least a year's waiting list ☹️.
Your post is very reassuring!

LefttoherownDevizes · 08/12/2021 19:51

I had my own thread today after needing 3 injections to numb my broken crowned tooth for a filling. It's a v broken molar that they suspect the crown will fail on so am looking at having it out, not quite wisdom but next door. And likely to need to cut the gum as too broken to grab and pull

SwanShaped · 08/12/2021 19:57

Mine was playing up loads too medievslist. And there was always the slight worry that it might kick off at any time. Like just before I go on holiday or whatever. Whereas now, I won’t have any of that! It’s done. I was half expecting that it was gonna be awful during the procedure but it really wasn’t. It really was as fine as people said.

SwanShaped · 08/12/2021 19:58

A year’s wait tho!! That’s rubbish.

Sounds agony devizes. Really grim.

I just had one out with only local anaesthetic. I wanted sedation but couldn't as am single parent and logistics of isolating them and me was too complicated. I was terrified. They brought an extra person into room and she grabbed my hands for me to squeeze hers.

I was shaking and couldn't stop afterwards - I think I must of been in some sort of shock as they gave me two glucose drinks at the end!

I was expecting more pain afterwards than I have had so far. Not even taken many painkillers.

LefttoherownDevizes · 08/12/2021 20:56

This thread is so reassuring, thank you

SwanShaped · 08/12/2021 21:07

Luckily I have my husband around so he could drive me after the procedure. Otherwise sedation wouldn’t be possible. But amazing you did it without sedation! Not surprised you were shaking afterwards. I can’t actually even remember the procedure now. I remember asking if they had put the sedation in. And the next thing I remember is being in the car going home. So it clearly worked. I was also expecting the pain to be a lot worse now. But it’s nowhere near as bad as my infection. Not even close.

devizes I had my gum cut too coz it’s got stitches in. So sounds like a similar thing that you’ll have. Just get it out!!
