How do I make my shitty Christmas garland look less shitty?

I need the creative minds of MN because I do not possess one. I decided not to put a tree up this year, because I have a 1 year old menace who'd just fell it or destroy it in other ways at some point.

I had a vision of a nice garland, festooned with tree ornaments instead. This does not match my vision...

I'm honestly fed up. It would've been easier just to police the tree Hmm

Command decoration hooks and hang the baubles on ribbons. From the window. I've done this due to my toddler and it looks fab

Another sad picture

Lots and lots of ivy, yew, holly, eucalyptus, etc – it needs bulk. Or set it on fire? But festively, with brandy.

Um...

Yeah, you're right, it doesn't look great does it!

SouthOfFrance · 08/12/2021 17:20

Could you put it on the fireplace instead (if you have one?) It might be the location of it as much as the decoration itself

PomegranateLindor · 08/12/2021 17:20

Setting on fire best suggestion so far Grin

I did this a few years ago OP and was similarly disappointed! You need to have the garland three times as long (I just bought two more and attached them) so that it goes all the way down the sides. It’s nowhere near generous enough at the mo.

Id also either not attach any decs (sorry they look a bit half arsed) or attach them all the way down the whole length (ie down the sides of your new longer garland).

luinagreine · 08/12/2021 17:25

It needs beefing up a bit, doesn't it? It's looking like a sad piece of tinsel draped rather than a garland. Go out foraging for twiggy shit and attach it with florist wire?

ParadiseLaundry · 08/12/2021 17:27

I second the command hooks to keep it over the door.

What about some battery powered fairy lights?

PomegranateLindor · 08/12/2021 17:28

I tried the command strips and hooks but they didn't stick at all, which is weird because it's not that heavy.

I do have a nice garland over the mantel already, perhaps I should buy a similar beefier one for there then?

I also have a string with little pegs for Christmas cards without a home, should I put that there instead??

Forget the garland and get a tree but only put a couple of soft unbreakable decorations within reach?

Pegasussnail · 08/12/2021 17:31

It is top thin. I wouldn't bother with tree decks on it. Good idea to fill it with more fresh greenery. Add battery operated lights

Stick a shin of beef up there too, that’s festive.

Pegasussnail · 08/12/2021 17:31

Too

ditalini · 08/12/2021 17:32

Agree it needs bulk, so more garland. Maybe twist a few together. Also maybe make more loops by attaching it to the door way at the centre point as well.

Once you've got more bulk then you can have baubles etc attached to the garland within the green as well as hanging down maybe.

But mainly your crime, imho, is YOU'VE GOT THE BIG LIGHT ON! Sub-optimal lighting always makes things look a bit start and rubbish.

ditalini · 08/12/2021 17:33

Ooh yes, battery lights wrapped through it will look nice.

PomegranateLindor · 08/12/2021 17:49

@ditalini I'm simply making the most of DH being away with work, it's like Blackpool immuminations in here, and nobody is policing the smart meter Grin

Just get a tree

Bedsheets4knickers · 08/12/2021 19:16

Buy more garland

Highlanders372 · 08/12/2021 19:30

Have you got a local woodland/forest/Park? If you can, pinch anything green (ivy, fir, holly). Tie into little bundles (elastic bands work well) and then attach them to your garland. I'd double your garland up and use it as a base for the foliage and have it running flat along the top of the door rather than draped.

Bluntness100 · 08/12/2021 19:32

I think thr baubles hanging in a row don’t help to be honest.

It needs fo be thicker, with lights round, and then lots of baubles, holly, poinsettia etc,and nice and full and luxurious.

Highlanders372 · 08/12/2021 19:33

This was my homemade 'garland' from last year.

tootyfruitypickle · 08/12/2021 19:40

I've hung mine up on command hooks by tying wool loops around the garland and then hooking them closely onto the hooks. Mines on the ceiling beam and staying up so far

I feel your pain OP. Not as easy as Insta makes it look right?

What about buying a table top tree? They are sweet, the one year old can gaze up but not grab and not expensive.
