How do I make my shitty Christmas garland look less shitty?

I need the creative minds of MN because I do not possess one. I decided not to put a tree up this year, because I have a 1 year old menace who'd just fell it or destroy it in other ways at some point.

I had a vision of a nice garland, festooned with tree ornaments instead. This does not match my vision...

I'm honestly fed up. It would've been easier just to police the tree Hmm

Op, i have these on my fireplaces, only seventeen quid, very bushy and full, so some command hoops and wool wrapped round. It will stay put and it’s only 17 quid.

Get some deco mesh, that will bill it out and then add in bunches of greenery from local walks, tying baubles in to groups of 3 works better as well to bulk it out

Put your tree in the travel cot on a box/table, literally had our Christmas tree like that for 7 years straight when the DCs were little

Gladioli23 · 08/12/2021 19:54

I think if you're doing a garland it would ideally be the thickness that a door wreath would be: it would then have the baubles etc pinned into the garland itself (e.g.) with floristry wire.

It will be doable but it will be a massive load of work as really the thickness of the whole thing will need bulking out with eucalyptus, fir, ivy, Holly etc.

In reality I would give up, but a small tabletop tree and use that.

AmberLynn1536 · 08/12/2021 19:54

I know it’s not your intention OP but your rather sad looking garland has made chuckle, I’ve had some bad news today and it’s cheered me up a bit so your garland has done me a good turn!

It screams 'chinese takeaway' but so does anything I attempt when it comes to Christmas decs Grin Sorry, not helpful but I'm loving your optimism and I applaud you.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Am sorry op, but it really does,

peaceanddove · 08/12/2021 20:52

Sorry OP but it looks like the garlands WH Smith's use to trim up the till area where they try and flog you out of date chocolate.

Garlands have to look bushy. I would double it up so it's more of a thick spray, position it in the centre of the door frame then pin some baubles into it, and hand a few more (on different lengths of red velvet ribbon).

ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings · 08/12/2021 21:04

I think the bits dangling down on either side should either be cut off or weighed down with a decoration so they hang a bit better. I would also twist some natural greenery into it, long vines of ivy or something.

Fairy lights

CanIPleaseHaveOne · 08/12/2021 22:27

It needs a somber burial, something to show dc when he grows up - his first Christmas...

thelegohooverer · 08/12/2021 22:35

I think the selection of baubles is a bit random. If they’re all going to be at the same level it would look better if they matched.

If you want a selection of types you need more of them, hanging at different heights (use the same type of ribbon for them all)

Make it bushier and add some lights (look for battery operated on a timer so you don’t need to give it another thought)

lastrolo10 · 08/12/2021 22:38

We’ve always ju

lastrolo10 · 08/12/2021 22:38

We’ve always just policed the tree

Cocolapew · 08/12/2021 22:39

I think the baubles would look better flush rather than hanging down, bulk it out a bit and lights.

Sunshineandrainbow · 08/12/2021 22:44

Bought some wire fairy lights from B and Q yesterday that would look great wrapped around it.

Cloudbaser · 08/12/2021 22:48

Buy a tree - home bargains, lidl and aldi all have cheap ones. You'll spend more plumping up the garland.

Lindy2 · 08/12/2021 22:52

It's a little on the skinny side isn't it. Garlands should be fat and lush.

You need about 3 more the same, wound together loosely to puff things out a bit or you need to pay for a much more substantial garland. What you have really is a slightly sad string of green tinsel.

Can you really not have a tree? My DD was a true tornado at 1 years old (and still is as a teen actually). We still out a tree up each year. Yes most of the baubles were rearranged or all around the room by the end of each day but it didn't take long to out them back on again once DD was in bed. I

If your child is a bit of a wrecking ball you're going to be putting something back together at the end of the day. It doesn't make that much difference if it's a tree or a load of toys.

Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 09/12/2021 06:37

It's very rare for dc to go near a tree it really is just get a small one. Failing that apparently next do a nice curtain. What about families with multi children? They all cope with trees. Go for it op then move the swag eslewre

Morechocmorechoc · 09/12/2021 06:41

Put the tree up, it's magical for then with the lights etc. I'm nit strict and still managed to nit let them in the tree Grin

PomegranateLindor · 09/12/2021 06:53

Well this has cheered me up a little this morning Grin

So last night after posting I had a small crisis. You know when you have a picture in your head and you just never achieve it? I had a small cry (it's been a long week at work) and then went to work pulling the stupid thing down.

It now looks like the entrance to Santa's grotto, and so far only 4 people like me enough to send me a Christmas card, but I think it looks slightly better. It's not going to look insta perfect, but not many people of Instagram have a travel cot guarding the presents either...

Bluntness100 · 09/12/2021 08:07

That’s much better. I’m sorry you cried about it. I’d take the crimbo cards down though, I’m sorry, they look weird.

Highlanders372 · 09/12/2021 08:15

I've had many shit garland moments in my life, its never really about the garland but having a cry is always a good idea. I think your grotto door way looks lovely. Merry Christmas.

Travellingraspberry · 09/12/2021 08:26

Pre decorated pop up Christmas tree is the way to go! They can take a bit of a battering and everything is firmly attached
