How do I get an Iceland shop 40 mins home?

talkalarm · 08/12/2021 11:01

I've bought a huge freezer, I would love to do an Iceland shop but they don't deliver to me and my nearest is 40 mins drive away.

I assume everything will melt on the drive home? Is there a solution I've missed?

A cool box with ice packs maybe

SilverHairedCat · 08/12/2021 11:05

Just to do it. I've bent worried about it unless it's ice cream 😂

Shedmistress · 08/12/2021 11:06

Melt? In the middle of winter?

Put it in the boot and don't blow hot air on it?

idontlikealdi · 08/12/2021 11:07

It'll be fine, cool bags if you're worried but this time of year it will keep itself cold enough in the boot of the car

KittenCatcher · 08/12/2021 11:07

Iceland sell insulated bags, £1.50 , ring the store first to check they have some in stock.

LadyDanburysHat · 08/12/2021 11:08

It's December, it'll be fine for 40 mins in normal carrier bags. But if you want to be prepared for warmer weather get some of the insulated shopping bags.

Nikita1709 · 08/12/2021 11:09

A cool box, or insulated bags, will help if you're really worried, but, if everything is frozen, then they will keep each other frozen - if you get my drift.

Surround the smaller items with bigger ones, as they will defrost faster, and I reckon you will have more than enough time to get back.

talkalarm · 08/12/2021 11:16

It's winter! You're right, it's bloody freezing, I somehow hadn't considered that (and this is why I need mumsnet)

What about meat though? Will that possibly be a bit dodgy if it starts to defrost?

If it helps our nearest supermarket is 1hr and 15mins away from us and we've not had a problem yet 😉
Like the others say use insulated and some freezer blocks if you can.

That must be a nightmare on a hot day!
SoupDragon · 08/12/2021 11:20

Having seen how slowly meat defrosts on the side in a warmish kitchen, I think you'll be fine with cool bags!

ineedaholidayandwine · 08/12/2021 11:21

Not quite 40 mins but we've had it before we've been caught in bad traffic with a boot full of fresh meat/frozen stuff and it was fine, that was towards the end of summer too so warmer. It's all bagged together so the cold will spread round the bag.

Mrsjayy · 08/12/2021 11:21

Iceland do free delivery if you spend over £25 or maybe £,30 you don't need to carry anything

Shedmistress · 08/12/2021 11:21

It won't. It is winter. Plus it will be surrounded by other frozen stuff.

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 08/12/2021 11:24

For about 25 years I've lived about an hour from the nearest decent supermarket. Normal carrier bags and no additional care gets ice cream home still frozen.

If I think about it I take a cool bag, or a big blanket. I pack meat with frozen stuff. But that's about it.

DraigFach · 08/12/2021 11:30

In the winter you'll be fine, just don't blast your heating in the car!

On your first visit there ask about their home delivery areas for in-store purchasing. Iceland don't deliver to my parents if you shop online because the food comes from the nearest "Warehouse" version of the store, but the closest actual Iceland store will deliver if you shop in person. Could be handy in the summer months if they do.

Singinghollybob · 08/12/2021 11:32

Considering how long meat takes to defrost on a kitchen counter, I think you'll be fine for 40 mins! It's also surrounded by other frozen food.

justasking111 · 08/12/2021 11:34

Throw a duvet over it, that keeps the cold in

WouldBeGood · 08/12/2021 11:39

It will all be absolutely fine 😊

elizabethdraper · 08/12/2021 11:42

There is only heavily processed junk in Iceland.

You are not missing out on anything

RubyFakeLips · 08/12/2021 11:43

It won’t melt but put anything your worried about centrally and put all bags close together.

I used to defrost my freezer over a few hours by putting all frozen stuff together in a black bag, tied tight on our cold garage floor. Only things like ice a cream started to go a bit soft. It was all packed together so stayed cool.

Forestdweller11 · 08/12/2021 11:43

Iceblocks - picnic sort . Or I've kept the Gusto freezer blocks for such purposes. Or old plastic juice/ milk containers nearly full with water frozen (lid off so they don't split) used as iceblocks.

Freezer/cool bags, or if you have any polystyrene boxes, newspaper or blankets over.

Keep everything heaped together. Things like peas and ice-cream in the middle.

So long as you don't take a 6hr detour all should be fine.

Kuachui · 08/12/2021 11:44

@mrsjayy the post litterally says they dont deliver to her 😂😂😂

Triyo · 08/12/2021 11:44

Everything shoved in together tightly packed in bags will keep everything frozen plus winter. I do a longer journey than that which I hate doing with a passion! for frozen stuff and it's always fine with my ram it in the bags tightly method. Ice cream type stuff you're really worried about melting, same method but in an ice bag or box if you have one, wedged in middle with other frozen stuff.

Really? I guess you haven't been for a while! Especially if it's a Food Warehouse
