Law firm salary

I qualified in 2015. I’m based outside London and work in commercial area rather than private client. It’s a national firm.

Obviously there’s strict rules around discussing salary and I’ve no idea if I’m paid average or badly or well. Nobody talks about it! I recently had a pay rise I was disappointed with. What would you say is average pay for this level?

Why don't you have a look at Roll On Friday www.rollonfriday.com/. That's generally fairly up to date.

Confuseer · 07/12/2021 10:00

Thanks @PiglingBlonde I have but it doesn’t seem up to date at all based on the two friends who work in London…

Law firms are so varied it's very hard to say. Some pay NQ at £30k and others pay them 150k.

What strict rules are there on discussing salary? legally you can discuss your salary all you like. it's your personal information.

It really depends where you are based, what type of firm what field you are in.

"Strict rules about discussing your salary" surely aren't enforcable.

There is only one reason for such rules and that is to keep lower paid staff lower paid.

Call a recruitment agency in your area and pretend, or perhaps do, look for a new job. They might be a little optimistic with the salary but you should get an idea of what you should be on or could earn.

7 years pqe in a large national firm outside of London. Depends on the field but around £60ish?

Bells3032 · 07/12/2021 10:59

@Confuseer i know you're not NQ but those are the salaries that usually are published and they're so wide ranging that it is hard to make an estimate further down the line.

Commercial law doesn't pay that well compared to other law sectors... NQ's start on approx 40k but as you've been qualified for 6 years you should be on between 65 - 80k... Are you in this bracket now? Also, remember if you've stayed with the same company for all those years you're salary is unlikely to have had substantial increases... you need to move on and negotiate to get the big hikes...
