Aren't social experiments fascinating?

You get 100 million for competing in a series of games. Simple ones. At the end, the overall winner bags the 100 million and everyone else gets a bullet to the head

Do you think most people would want to do it?

I'd run a mile. I'd rather be poor, but maybe that's because I'm from a privileged place - Living in UK.

What would you do?

I tried watching Squid Game as suggested to me by a few people and I can't watch it. It makes me uncomfortable. Not the gore parts even really

Thats not a social experiment...

Kanaloa · 06/12/2021 23:23

I would say most people wouldn’t want to do it, because the risk far outweighs the benefit.

However, that’s sort of the point of fiction. Most people wouldn’t want to fight evil wizards, but the Harry Potter novels wouldn’t be as interesting if they focused on a student who wanted to get good exam results and possibly work in the ministry. Most people don’t want to be battered by supervillains, but the Avengers movies are hardly going to tell the story of that one guy in the background. They have to show you the people in desperate situations because that’s what gives the character motivation and makes it an interesting story. Otherwise it would be like watching real life!

@R0tational Isn't it? Blush

@Kanaloa hmm you're right. What if I changed it then to...

100 players. 99 players get 100 million. There's 1 in 100 chance you'll not be one of them and you'll die. But 99% chance you won't

I think many more people would want to accept...

Oh no I wouldn't do it. I'm a born loser. In a game of 50/50 I always pick the wrong option. I'd definitely end up with a bullet to the head.

FluffyBooBoo · 06/12/2021 23:33

I would say that's a thought experiment rather than a social experiment.

But yeah, I suspect people would be most likely to take on odds of 99/100 rather than, say, 1/50.

HailAdrian · 07/12/2021 00:08

No way and I would have voted to leave squid game too.

Atla · 07/12/2021 00:27

The point of the squid game was that the players had nothing to lose. For them the risk was worth it because they were all desperate. As a normal person, in normal circumstances, no of course you wouldn't do it.

Atla · 07/12/2021 00:28

Not least because I'm crap at games😂

Ozanj · 07/12/2021 00:31

It’s a more adult version of Hunger Games. And actually games to the death where only one participant was allowed out did happen in Roman arenas.
