Changing name on passport

Right- so finally decide that keeping my maiden name passport is so much hassle and that I should have just bought a new one in my married name.

Just looking online and can see that it takes 10 weeks but can anyone tell me when do you have to send the old passport back and the marriage certificate off?

It doesn't tell you on line until you get to the relevant step and I need a new photo first before I can start the process.

I don't know the answer but I'm baffled as to how it can be more difficult to keep something is than change it...

My understanding was that you have to send the old passport & marriage certificate for the 10 weeks to start, but I didn’t go through with it - I’ve kept it in my maiden name until it runs out 🙈

We did a normal renewal recently, the document request came through as soon as the counter signer did his bit online. It took four days after being recieved to be officially recieved. Passports came three weeks later, but they were child renewals.

The clock starts ticking on your 10 weeks after they receive your documents, so the sooner you send them, the better.

Just done my passport and it was four weeks in total.

Great thanks for all the replies

@eurochick I totallly agree-that why I kept it. but ...my covid pass and insurance are in my married name (I had to revert back to my maiden name for last trip that was a nightmare in itself) and my passport was in my maiden name and tickets in my maiden name and also not having is that matches the bank and getting a new credit card had to apply in maiden name then send if for a name change. Add to that getting a dbs for work it is a headache!

I suppose I've come to view it's as I need my primary official ID in my actual name.

I need to do mine. I was going to keep it but my driving licence expires next year. You can renew online if you have a valid passport but my passport isn’t in my married name yet!

Plump82 · 06/12/2021 18:02

I just changed my passport to my married name. They received my documents in the 12th November and it was approved on the 27th. I got the passport through on the 30th. It also said 10 weeks for me when I renewed.

dementedpixie · 06/12/2021 18:05

If you do an online application you can take your picture with your phone as part of the process. They will then tell you where to send the marriage certificate and old passport

dementedpixie · 06/12/2021 18:06

I.e. you don't need a physical photo as you can use a digital one.

Plump82 · 06/12/2021 20:07

I struggled to get a place in my flat that would have suitable background so found an app the removed all the background for me. I did have to pay but it was only £2 or £3. But I wouldnt have bothered with this if I had a decent place for a photo.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/12/2021 20:13

If you can't do the photo at home, the machines give you a code o you can still do it online.

cherrypiepie · 06/12/2021 20:57

This is all really great info especially the timeline @Plump82

I have a digital picture from my driving licence renewed in august but I think it may be rejected as my hair is slightly over my eye socket.

And I hate it (somehow my face looks flat and I have tree rings on my neck m) so it's a great excuse to have another. I may wear a Christmas jumper. There is a max speilman at the supermarket so I'll go there and the person takes it for you. I did the booth thing last time- hopefully I can Look less flat!
