kids passport use - 5 yrs 6 months from issue or 6 months from expiry

Kids passport was issued Feb17 and expires Nov 22.

Can we use it up to May 22 or only to Nov 21 as it has to have 6 months left on it now. I read here for adult ones it is 9.5 years from issue date.

Needs renewing as an adult one next time if that makes any difference.

Depends on the country. The Nordic countries specifically say you must have 6 months left on the passport. Many European countries do too.

It's only valid until feb 22, it is five years from the issue date as extra months are now not being recognised.

Technically if you require 6 months validity left to travel it expires 6 months prior to feb 22 as that would be the latest you could travel with those conditions

EU countries require your passport to be valid for 3 months after you leave. If you have booked outward and return tickets, the 3 months starts after the return date. If you have not booked return tickets, you are entitled to travel in Europe for 90 days without a VISA so you could technically need 6 months from the date of travel on your passport, hence the 6 months guidance. However, your passport only needs to be valid for 3 months.

The complexity over the added time where passports were issued with more than 10 years validity on them only relates to 10 year passports.. not 5 year ones as the EU does not considered passports to be valid for longer than 10 years.

You could return from Europe up to August 22 though the UK government advises you do not travel after May 22.

I am never sure why this seems complicated but basically, the rules vary by country and, importantly, the country of issue vs the country you are travelling to. eg, you can return to the UK on a UK passport that expired within the previous six months. However, you cannot travel to a country outside of the UK with a passport that has less than 3 months, often 6, until expiry.

So basically, unless you have two passports, you need to have at least 3 months, preferably 6, on your passport before you leave the UK.

They only dont recognise the extra months on a 10 year passport as the validity cannot exceed 10 years. A child passport is under 10 years old even with the extra months added so should be valid until its expiry date

It's complicated because in the last extra months could be added to the passport making it valid for up to 10y 9 months. The extra months are no longer recognised so the passport may actually expire much earlier than it says on it. Then add on that some countries need 3 or 6 months validity left then you have to do a bit of maths to work out when you need to renew it

It is very complicated because the rules have changed regarding the issue date and the rules differ for 5 and 10 year passports!! As some of the others have explained above. Our kids passport was issued for 5 and a half years.
